Rotary Blower

Rotary Blower

• are a constant volume device that employ lobe impellers rotating in

opposite directions within a blower housing closed at the ends by end
plates and traps a certain volume of air or gas then discharges or
forces it out against the system pressure.
• gas flows from high pressure to low pressure. Blowers create
differential pressure so they can be used to transport air or gas from
one location to another. The discharge pressure of the blower needs to
be higher than the system pressure if flow is to be established.
Types of Rotary Blower

Twin Lobe Blower - contains two shaped lobes

Tri-Lobe Blower - consists of three lobes shaped

like a boat propeller
Physical Studies

Flow of Air
The air or gas flow through a rotary blower can be divided into four stages:
1. Inlet stage: The air or gas enters the blower through the inlet port and
is trapped in one of the chambers.
2. Compression stage: As the lobes or impellers rotate, the chamber is
reduced in volume, which compresses the air or gas. The fluid is then
compressed to a higher pressure than the atmospheric pressure at the
inlet port.
3. Discharge stage: The compressed air or gas is discharged from the
blower through the outlet port.
Physical Studies
How the temperature and pressure of air or gas change as it passes through a rotary blower:

1. As the air or gas enters the blower, it is trapped in one of the

chambers.
2. As the lobes rotate, the chamber is reduced in volume, which
compresses the air or gas.
3. The compression process is adiabatic, meaning that no heat is
exchanged with the surroundings.
4. As the air or gas is compressed, its temperature increases.
5. The compressed air or gas is then discharged from the blower at a
higher pressure and temperature than it entered.
Key Components of a Rotary Blower
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Housing: The housing is the outer shell of the blower that contains
the rotors and other internal components.
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Rotors: The rotors are the main component of the blower that compress the air or gas. They have a lobe profile that allows them to mesh
with each other and create a seal.
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Shafts: The rotors are mounted on shafts, which are connected to

a power source (such as an electric motor).
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Bearings: The bearings support the rotors and allow them to

rotate freely.

Seals: The seals prevent air or gas leakage from the blower. The seals help to
maintain the pressure inside the blower and also prevent dust and other
contaminants from entering the blower.
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Inlet and outlet valves: The inlet and outlet valves control the flow of air or
gas into and out of the blower.
Key Components of a Rotary Blower

Gearbox: The gearbox reduces the speed of the power source and
increases the torque applied to the rotors.
Performance

The common performance of rotary blowers is as follows:

- Efficiency: 60-80%
- Capacity: 100-5000 CFM (170-8500 CMH)
- Pressure rise: 2-10 PSI (14-70 kPa)
- Temperature rise: 20-40 °F (11-22 °C)
