Statement of the Problem

Coal is one of the abundant natural resources we can

use as a source of energy. Using coal as an energy
source had environmental impacts such as ground
level ozone, smog, particulate emission and acid rain.
The ashes from the coal contributes to air pollution
which is harmful to many individuals. Air pollution
from some coal carries health impacts like asthma,
cancer, heart and lung disease and many more, so the
researches tried to find a way to lessen these harmful
impacts to us individuals and to the environment. The
researchers specifically wanted to try and test out
these questions:
1) Can rice hulls be a good substitute
to a working coal?

2)Can the rice hulls be an alternative

fuel by making it as a charcoal?

3)Will it lessen the air pollution that it

gives to the environment?
Significance of the Study
This study aims to create a charcoal using the rice hulls which is from the outer-
most part of the rice which is considered a waste material from rice milling. The
rice hulls are a renewable resource that is often burned and discarded as a
waste. That is the reason why we thought of using the rice hulls to create a char-
coal, because it is a valuable resource that can be used for a variety of purposes.
By using rice hulls to create charcoal, we can reduce the amount of waste and even
help the environment much safer. This charcoal product from the rice hulls can be
environmentally friendly and might be considered as a non-toxic charcoal. Also this
product can be an additional source of income for farmers and people who are find-
ing a source of income. This can also improve the livelihoods of the people, which
they can save their money instead of buying charcoal from outside. However, rice
hulls are also a popular substrate for gardening as they absorb the liquid and an en-
vironmentally sustainable drainage option. In fact, rice hulls are considered as one
of the most sustainable soil amendments available for greenhouse growers because
they help improve drainage, water holding capacity, and aeration. So in this study of
using rice hulls to create charcoal holds a significant potential for environment,
economic and social benefits.
