Problems in
Agriculture sector
of Pakistan
By Malaika Maqbool
Introduction
The agriculture sector plays a vital role in Pakistan's
economy, employing a significant portion of the
population and contributing to the country's GDP.
This sector faces numerous challenges that hinder
its growth and sustainability.
 We can discuss three major problems in the
agriculture sector of Pakistan, exploring their
causes and potential solutions.
Issues in Agriculture
Water Scarcity and Irrigation
Issues

Extension Services
Water Scarcity and
Irrigation Issues

 Water scarcity is a critical issue affecting

agriculture in Pakistan.
 The country largely depends on an irrigation
system to sustain its agriculture, but
inadequate water availability and inefficient
irrigation practices pose significant challenges
 Pakistan's water resources are dwindling due
to factors such as rapid population growth,
climate change, and mismanagement of water
resources.
 Inefficient Irrigation Techniques
 Lack of Water Storage Facilities
 Climate Change Impacts
Solutions
 Promote modern irrigation
techniques such as drip irrigation
and sprinkler systems to minimize
water wastage.
 Adopt efficient water management
practices.
 Develop more water storage
reservoirs to capture excess
rainwater for use during periods of
water scarcity.
 Implement climate change
adaptation measures to cope with
erratic weather patterns, such as
introducing drought-resistant crop
varieties and improving water
conservation technique
Small Landholdings

• Fragmented landholdings in Pakistan result

in suboptimal use of land and limit
economies of scale.
• Small farmers often lack access to modern
machinery and face challenges in adopting
efficient farming practices.
• Small farmers struggle to access formal
credit, preventing them from investing in
modern technologies, fertilizers, and
improved seeds
• . Lack of financial resources hampers
productivity and inhibits the adoption of
advanced farming techniques.
Post-Harvest Losses and
Inadequate Value Chain
Management

• Post-harvest losses have a significant impact on

the agriculture sector in Pakistan.
• Inefficient value chain management, inadequate
storage facilities, and poor transportation
infrastructure contribute to substantial food
losses, impacting farmers' income and food
security.
• Insufficient cold storage facilities lead to post-
harvest losses, particularly in perishable
commodities such as fruits and vegetables.
• Limited access to cold storage results in price
fluctuations and reduced profitability for farmers.
Solutions
• Invest in cold storage facilities and promote
the establishment of cold chains to minimize
post-harvest losses of perishable goods.
• Improve transportation infrastructure,
including road networks and refrigerated
transport, to ensure timely and efficient
movement of agricultural produce from
farms to markets.
• Facilitate the establishment of farmers'
markets and direct marketing initiatives,
enabling farmers to bypass intermediaries
and obtain fair prices for their produce.
• Strengthen farmers' access to market
information through the use of mobile
technology and market intelligence systems.
• Promote value addition and ago-processing
industries to reduce post-harvest losses and
increase the value of agricultural produce.
