Background of the Study
The study delves into the intricate relationships between sleep duration,
cognitive function, sleep deprivation, and academic performance among students in
the School of Allied-Medicine (SAM) at Universidad de Zamboanga. SAM students,
pursuing diverse healthcare programs, are known for their rigorous academic
demands, making them susceptible to sleep-related issues. Despite the well-
established connections between sleep and cognitive performance, there is a paucity
of research specifically exploring these dynamics within the unique context of SAM
students, motivating the need for this comprehensive investigation. This research
holds significant benefits for SAM students by providing insights into the impact of
sleep on cognitive function and academic performance, potentially leading to tailored
interventions for enhanced well-being and academic success. Additionally, educators
and institutions can benefit from a nuanced understanding of the sleep-related
challenges faced by SAM students, fostering the development of targeted support
systems and fostering a conducive learning environment.
Theoretical Framework
• Sleep and Memory Consolidation Theory (Robert Stickgold, Matthew P. Walker
2005) This theory posits that sleep, particularly the rapid eye movement (REM) and
slow-wave sleep (SWS) stages, plays a crucial role in the consolidation of memories
acquired during wakefulness.

• The Sleep Deprivation and Cognitive Load Theory (David F. Dinges and Hans P.A.
Van Dongen 2003) The theory posits that inadequate sleep creates an elevated
cognitive load, resulting in deficits in attention, working memory, and decision-
making.

• The Circadian Rhythm and Academic Performance Theory (Young, Jeffrey C. Hall
2017) posits that academic performance is influenced by the alignment of individual
circadian rhythms with daily learning schedules.

Respondents of the Study
Student-respondents will be the Universidad de Zamboanga city.
School of Allied-Medicine (SAM) students who are enrolled during the
first semester of school year 2023-2024. The researchers polled 50
respondents per program, for a total of 250 students.
