COLLECTION
The procedure for collecting body fluid specimens
involves
a minor surgical procedure that is usually named for the
site of collection.
Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) Spinal tap
Pleural fluid Thoracentesis
Pericardial fluid Pericardiocentesis
Peritoneal fluid (ascites) abdominal Paracentesis (general
term used for puncture of any body cavity
Lecturer: Abdikani
The function of body fluids
include:
1. Regulate body temperature
Body temperature regulation, of body fluids and
excretions are elements of homeostasis (an attempt to
restore normal environmental conditions).
Body temperature must be within the normal range, and
this is because any deviation would affect the function
of metabolism and enzyme activity.
.
2 reduce friction .
3. Remove toxins and waste food
Toxins are solids, liquids and gases that can interfere
with the process of living organisms.
Toxins attack and destroy red blood cells by
destroying red blood cell walls
4. Keeping the skin moist
5. Helps the digestive process
Digestion process consists of three cycles of
a) Absorb the food
b) Digesting food substances
c) Disposing of food waste
Of the three processes, the presence of fluid is needed
for the process of digestion
Barriers separate ICF, interstitial fluid and
plasma
Plasma membrane
Separates ICF from surrounding interstitial fluid
Blood vessel wall
Separate interstitial fluid from plasma
Composition of body fluids
Na+ /K+ pumps play major role in keeping K+ high inside cells and Na+ high
outside cell
Sodium Na+
