HYPOTHESIS

• In an anti-Helmholtz coil arrangement, the region of uniform gradient of magnetic field is obtained
when the distance between the Helmholtz coils is equal to the radius. This region of uniform gradient of
magnetic field can be improved at the expense of the magnitude of the gradient by changing the
distance between the Helmholtz coils.
CONTROL EXPERIMENT

Positive control
Calculation of the gradient of magnetic field when the distance between the Helmholtz coils is equal to the
radius of the coil.

Independent variable: linearity of calculated between the centres of the 2 coils

Dependent variable: distance between the Helmholtz coils
UNCERTAINTY CALCULATION
EXPERIMENT PROTOCOL
1. Attach two coils to the Helmholtz base, parallel to each other, at a distance from the other coil equal to the radius
of the coil.
2. Connect the second coil in series with the first coil.
3. With the DC power supply off, set the Magnetic Field Sensor in the middle of the track about 5 cm from the first
coil. Press the tare button.
4. Turn on the DC power supply and adjust the voltage so about 1 Amp flows through the coils but in opposite
directions.
5. Click on START in DataStudio and slowly move the Magnetic Field Sensor along the center of the track, keeping the
probe parallel to the track, until the end of the sensor is about 5 cm past the second coil. Then click on STOP.
6. Now vary the separation between the coils from R to 2R, incrementing the distance by 0.2R.
7. Plot the graphs of B vs x (distance between the coils) and fit a straight line and check the linearity for all the values
of x.
