WHAT IS CHEMOPORT?

A chemo port is small implantable device {reservoir }


with a thin silicon tube that attaches to a vein. {jugular
vein, large veins}
WHERE IS CHEMOPORT IMPLANTED?

 Usually, a chemo port is placed under the skin near a large vein in the upper chest.
HOW LONG A CHEMOPORT CAN
REMAIN IN PLACE?

 Itmust be inserted for 3-5 years after that when it is no


longer needed the port can be removed.

ADVANTAGES

 A port can be used for delivering fluids and blood transfusions,


drawing blood for lab testing and injecting dye for PET and CT
scan
 It reduces the risk of phlebitis, extravasation and tenderness in
veins.
 It can be used to provide treatments for several days such as
multiple day chemotherapy.
COMPLICATIONS

 Injury to large blood vessels


 Cardiac arrhythmia
 Malposition of the catheter
 Blockages of the catheter
 Pneumothorax {collapsed lungs}
 Embolism {air bubble in the blood vessels}
 Blood clot in catheter vein
