Definition of
EXTEMPORANEOUS
SPEECH
EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH
An extemporaneous speech is a
planned and prepared speech. An
extemporaneous speech is
delivered with the help of short
notes and a clear outline.
3 Steps in Studying your
Extemporaneous Topic
1. Identify the type of extemporaneous question
you have to answer.
- Is it a question of fact?
Example:
Is Syria’s crisis a problem of the whole
world?
- Is it a question of value?
Example:
Is it better for the European nations to step
in and aid Syria or ignore the country’s civil crisis?

- Is it a question of policy?
Example:
Should European countries enforce laws to
accommodate Syrian refuges?
2. Determine the purpose appropriate
to your topic.

3. Stick to your topic and look at all of

the sides and angles of the problem.
02
Steps in Preparing for a Successful
Extemporaneous Speech
1. Reinforce! You may explore other main points,
but always refer back to your thesis.
2. Capture! State the central idea of your
extemporaneous speech in one declarative
sentence.
3. Develop! You are ready to map out the
supporting points.
4. Introduce!
- Grab the attention of the audience
- Give a short background
- State your thesis
5. Check! Develop at least three main points.
- Does each point have one single idea?
- Does each point reiterate the thesis?
- Does each point prepare the discussion of the
next main point?
6. Supply! Make sure that each main point has
enough examples, testimonies and statistics.
7. Conclude! Reinforce your introduction by
coming up with a closing attention getter.

concerned and informed.
Disadvantages of Extemporaneous
Speech
A more-than-adequate preparation is
required of you as a speaker because its
success largely depends on your skill.
MANUSCRIPT SPEECHES
This is when a speaker reads a pre-written
speech word by word to an audience. It is
when already prepared script is read
verbatim. The speaker makes the entire
speech by referring to the printed
document, or as seen on the teleprompter.

• Begin with your introductory sentence, elaborate,
then start working your way to your ending sentence.

• As you deliver your speech, concentrate on diction

and tone.
Your mind can’t think about too many things at
once, so think about breathing, enunciating your words,
and controlling your tone, and you’ll maintain more
control.
ENTERTAINMENT SPEECH
An entertainment speech aims to share
goodwill, joy, and pleasure to the audience.
The purpose of an entertainment speech is
not to educate, inform, or inspire because the
primary goal is to make the audience relax,
enjoy, and even laugh.
● Adopt your speeches
When you’re giving a speech, you always need a
back-up plan.
● Keep an eye on time
Inspiration and adrenaline may take you far, but
don’t forget that you have time limits.
● Enjoy your speech
Sincerity is the key to the heart of your audience.

Tips on how to deliver a
Extemporaneous Speech
• One Presentation Structure
The best way to develop your extemporaneous style
is to use a solid structure, like the SEE one. The
abbreviation stands for Statement, Evidence, and
Emotion. This scheme is a useful tool for you to
utilize when you need to speak extemporaneously
during a speech.
• Tap into the Power of Extemporaneous
Presentation Methods
There might be situations when you’ll feel
uncomfortable speaking to a large – or not very –
number of people. Your audience will sense this
inner tension during the speech unless you find a
way to maintain communication with them.
• Don’t Strive to Memorize Everything at Once
Learning texts by heart is a great practice anytime,
except when it comes to giving an extemporaneous
speech. Memorizing everything you want to
pronounce in front of the audience will only distract
you from what’s important – the message you want
to speak on.
02
INFORMATIVE
SPEECH
INFORMATIVE SPEECHES
When delivering an informative speech, your
objective is to enlighten and educate your
audience on a subject. This type of speech
involves the use of demonstrations,
descriptions, definitions, and details to
explain a topic, person, or place.
Tips on how to deliver Informative
Speech
• Explain your Thesis
First, once you have narrowed down upon the
topic of your speech, the next step is to form a
thesis. To deliver an impactful informative
speech it is best to work under the assumption
that your audience knows nothing about a topic.
• Outline the structure of your speech
Each of the paragraphs should transition
smoothly while keeping your audience engaged.
You may also start your informative speech on a
light note before drawing your audience into a
more serious discussion. Followed by the main
body which forms the central part of your
speech. Lastly, your conclusion.
• Ask the audience for feedback
Once you have completed your
informative speech, it is a good practice
to open the floor for discussion. You can
also ask the audience to comment upon
your writing, speaking, and presentation
skills to be taken care of in future
projects.
• Quote authentic data sources
Informative speeches require
extensive use of data, facts, figures,
and statistics. These sources could be
names of websites, books, journals,
newspapers, audio books, etc.
• Work on your presentation skills
Make sure to practice the speech to avoid
last minute anxiety and nervousness.
Practice in front of a camera, mirror or
take assistance from a
friend or colleague once you have
memorized the speech.
• Wrap up your speech effectively
Once you are done delivering an
informative speech, make sure
to thank people for making out time
from their busy schedules and for
coming to listen to you.
