RELATION & FUNCTION

SEPTEMBER 15,2022
RELATION

 A relation is a rule that pairs each element in one setr called the domain , with one or
more elements from a second set called the range.

 It creates a set of ordered pairs.

FUNCTION

 A function is a rule that pairs each element in one set, called domain, with exactly one
element from a second set called the range.
 For each x-coordinate ( abscissa) , there is exactly one y-coordinate (ordinate) .
 There is a one-to-one correspondence or many-to-one correspondence between x and y
elements, while one-to many correspondence is not a function, but a mere relation.
Representations of Functions:
Graph of a Linear Function
Graph of a Quadratic Function
Graph of a Polynomial Function (Cubic)
 5. Standard Form (Equation)
 Linear Function : f(x) = ax + b where a 0
 y= 4x + 6
 Quadratic Function: f(x) = a wherte a 0
 y= 2- 4x- 7
 Polynomial Function : P(x) = a + b cx +d where a 0.
 y= 3 + 4 - x + 5
 1. x 1 2 3 4

y 5 6 7 8
 3. = x – 16

 4. ( 1,1) , (2,4), (3, 9), (4, 16)

 5. (1, 1) , (1, -1), (4, 2), (4, -2)

 6. y = -1

 7. -2x + 5 = y
