ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Alhamdullillah and all praise to Almighty Allah S.W.T. for giving me the strength and ability
to complete and prepare my folio within the scheduled time.
First of all, I would like to convey my special thanks of gratitude to my Science Teacher;
Puan Hazirah Rauazi who gave me this golden opportunity to do this interesting project on
the topic of Air Pollution which also helped me from the very beginning in doing a lot of
research towards the completion of this folio.
Secondly, I would like to thank to my parents, my brothers and sister for their guidance,
supports and encouragement.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to all my friends who has been very helpful and
sharing their valuable ideas.
Finally many THANKS to all people who have contributed directly and indirectly in
completing this folio.

What is air pollution ?
According to WHO air pollution is defines as
“…Phenomenon in which substances out into air by the
activity of mankind into concentration sufficient to cause
harmful effect to his health, vegetables, property…”
It refers to any physical, chemical or biological change in the
air
It is the contamination of air by harmful gases, dust and
smoke which effects plants, animals and human drastically.
There are two (2) types of air pollutant.:
Primary Secondary

The pollutant formed from a

The pollutant that directly
chemical reaction pollutants
cause air pollution E.g sulphur
E.g. smog formed by the
dioxcide from factories
intermingling of smoke and fog
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION TO
HUMAN ENVIROMENT
HEALTH:
• Asbestos particles can cause cancer.
• Smoke and dust can cause breathing problems.
• Sulphur dioxide can cause respiratory problems.
• lead particles can cause Intellectual disability among children and babies.
• Carbon monoxide can cause headache, mental retardation and death.

BUILDING AND INFRASTRUCTURES:

• Dust and soot stain buildings.
• Acid rain speeds up iron rusting.
• Acid rain corrodes concrete and

HUMAN ENVIROMENT
PLANTS AND ANIMALS:
• Acid rain makes soil acidic and less fertile.
• Acid rain makes source of water acidic and not suitable for aquatic life.
• Smoke and haze decrease the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth and
decrease the rate of photosynthesis.

CLIMATE
• Smoke from factories, vehicles and open burning lead to haze.
• Excessive carbon dioxide contributes to greenhouse affect.
• Excessive chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) causes thinning of the ozone layer.
• Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide cause acid rain.
WAYS TO KEEP THE AIR CLEAN
WALK OR BIKE:
Instead of automatically grabbing your car keys, walk or ride your bike whenever you can. Increase your
opportunities to get there under your own steam by switching to neighborhood shops, restaurants and service
providers.

RECYCLE ELECTRONICS:
The term ‘’eCycling‘’ means recycling use electronics, by refurbishing them for new users or reusing their
metal, plastic and glass. Recycling electronic reduces the need for mining and processing new materials.

PROTECT PLANTS AND TREES:

Encourage community preservatives, planting and plant trees around your own home. Trees remove carbon
dioxide from air, from up to 25 pounds.
SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollution is caused by the emission of dirty smoke by industry directly into
the air chimneys, factories, motor vehicles on the road and volcanic eruptions
• The combustion of gasoline and other hydrocarbon in automobiles, trucks and
jet planes produce several primary pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, gaseous
hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide.
• The diagram below shows the sources of air pollution in South and Southeast
Asia:
EXAMPLE OF AIR POLLUTION
NOISE POLLUTION
• Noise pollution or unwanted sounds that are carried by air, have an irritating
and detrimental effects on humans and other animals.

TOBACCO SMOKE
• Tobacco smoke is one of the major forms of air pollution in buildings. It is not
only the smoker who is effected, but everyone who inhales the polluted air.

EXHAUST GASES OF VEHICLES

• Pollution from exhaust gases from vehicles is responsible for 60% of all air
pollution and cities up to 80% .There is a large variety of harmful chemicals in
these gases
EXAMPLE OF AIR POLLUTION
COMBUSTION OF COAL
• The combustion of coal without special precautions can have serious
consequences .If winds do not blow away the poisonous gases, they can
have fatal effects that may lead death.

ACID RAIN
• Acid rain is the term of pollution caused when sulfur and nitrogen dioxide
combine with atmospheric moisture to produce highly acidic rain, snow, fog
or hail. The acid eats into stone, brick, metal articles and pollutes water sources
Coal in South Africa is rich in sulfur and the power stations in the Mpunlanga
Province could be responsible for acid rain over other areas in our country.
