DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF FEEDBACK-CONTROLLED
PROCESSES

Generalized closed loop system

For each component in the closed loop system, we can write a transfer
function relating inputs to outputs.

Example 1
Consider the block diagram of the closed loop below;
1. Considering a regulating problem where a unit step change in disturbance
occurs, find the open and closed-loop response;
2. Considering a servo problem where a unit step change in set-point occurs, find
the closed-loop response.
Note: y(0) = 0

1. Regulating problem
The closed loop response to a unit step change in disturbance is given by:

Example 2
Consider the block diagram of the closed-loop system shown below. For a unit step
change in the set-point, do the following:
a) Compute the overshoot, decay ratio and period of oscillation when:

 Kc = 1 and τ1 = 0.5;

 Kc = 20 and τ1 = 0.5;

 Kc = 1 and τ1 = 0.1;

a) Compare the response found in part 1 and discuss the effect of Kc and τ 1 on the
closed-loop response of a system;
b) Sketch qualitatively the responses for the three cases of Kc and τ 1 values given in part
1.
