In 1929, the Great
Depression led to families
starving. Churches and
shelters came up with a
wonderful idea of having a
soup kitchen. They would
serve bread and soup to
those in need.
We still have soup
kitchens/food shelters
today!
You can add an extra slide for answers if needed!
Before the Stock Market Crash of 1929, what were the people doing
when investing in the stock market?
ANSWER:

Who is Herbert Hoover? What did Hoover do?

ANSWER:

What was created to help those that were hungry? Do we still have
those today, if so name some.
ACTIVITY:
Draw an ideal
picture of what you
think a soup
kitchen looks like.
Upload the picture
to the right of
instructions.

DAY THREE- should take from 30-
45 minutes.
Today we will be covering
important cultural elements of the
1930s.
In the 1930s, jazz music came to
life. The music created an escape
from all of the financial burdens.
I want you to find a piece of jazz
music from the 1920s-30s. Tell me
what that piece of music means to
you. Click here!
Duke Ellington
If you watched the video I
posted on Padlet, you would’ve
noticed Duke Ellington was the
artist. Ellington and band
became famous throughout the
Great Depression while playing
at the famous Cotton Club. This
was a white only club, and it
was very rare for anyone beside
whites to play music at the club.
Margaret Mitchell
Famous author if Gone
With the Wind. In 1936,
Mitchell sold more than
a million copies of her
book. This made an
increase on American
hopes for the economy.
Jesse Owens
During the Great Depression,
Owens enrolled into a technical
college that would guarantee him
employment in order to help
support his family. Owens
developed a love for track and field,
this is where he set three world
records. He became a star in
sprints and long jumps. In 1936, he
competed in the Olympics this took
place in Germany. He was the first
American to win four gold medals.
