Basic First Aid
Choking; is reparatory distress that occurs when the air
way is partially or totally obstructed by the foreign body
or tongue
Choking cuts off oxygen to the brain give first aid as
quickly as possible
In adults choking is often the result of inadequately
chewed food becoming lodged in the throat or
windpipe solid food such as meat but in young child
Retend to put in to their mouth
Hanging the Neck
Basic First Aid
Factor that increasing risk of choking
Taking while simultaneously chewing a
piece of meat
Drinking alcohol while eating
Warning dentures
Basic First Aid
Basic First Aid
How to recognize choking
Difficulties in breathing
Unable to speak
Coughing rapidly
Showing universal sign of choking (victim hanging their
neck)
Cyanosed (blue discoloration of the skin)
Reparatory collapse
Basic First Aid

Classification

of Choking
Basic First Aid
1, Based on clinical manifestation

A, Partial Choking
 Facial distress
 Tearing
 Ability cough
 Ability to speech
 Semi conscious
Basic First Aid
B, Complete Choking
Have no facial distress
Have no treating
Have no cough & speech
Un conciseness
Basic First Aid
2, Based on Causative Agent
A, Anatomical Choking
There are different cause for anatomical
choking but the most common is tongue back
flow
Basic First Aid
Why tongue back flow during choking time

During choking the air become obstruct.

Once the air way abstract that decrease
or stop air flow to the brain. once the
brain cannot gait oxygen .The brain
function become detorarte or stop .
Basic First Aid
Brain are important for to control all body function
including 12 pair cranial nerve among 12 pair cranial
nerve CN(12) hypoglossal nerve important for to
control tongue movement .
So hypoglossal nerve function regulate by the brain.
So a brain function become stop these nerve cannot
work properly b/c of these tongue move back to
reparatory treat
Basic First Aid
Why the tongue move back to respiratory tract b/c
2/3 the tongue mass found in the posterior part
Swelling of respiratory tract
Swelling of respiratory are cause by different factor
such allergic reaction ,medication and Burn in the
respiratory tract .During these medical condition the
respiratory tract become swelling these are cause for
choking
Basic First Aid
B, mechanical choking
They have different causative factor that obstruct the
respiratory tract .
The most common are food ,coin also called foreign
body
Most communally mechanical choking occur partially
Basic First Aid
Choking Management
If a person is choking and can’t talk, cry or laugh
force fully the American red cross recommends a five
and five approach to delivering first aid
Basic First Aid
Type of choking management
1. Five Back blows (thrusts)
2. Five Abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)
3. Five Chest thrust
4. Self help abdominal thrust
Basic First Aid
1, Five (5) Back Blows
Blows apply around b/n shoulder blades
Used for semi conscious patient for five cycle
Provide support by placing one arm diagonally across
the chest and bend the person forward at the waist
until the upper air ways is at least parallel to the
ground
Not used for pregnant mother
Five (5) Back Blows
Basic First Aid
2, Abdominal Thrusts
Also called Heimlich man ever
Always used for conscious patient
Ask a patient about the condition
Press fist in to causality abdomen with individuals
inward and upward thrusts
Apply slightly above umbilicus
Not used for pregnant mothers
Abdominal Thrusts
Basic First Aid
3, Chest Thrusts
One of choking management most commonly used
pregnant mother
Apply around the level of sternum
Chest Thrusts
Basic First Aid
4, self help abdominal thrust
If there are other nearby get their attention. If you
are alone do whatever you must do to get someone
attention call the local emergency number (939)
If there is no else to give you abdominal thrusts give
them to your self
Self Help Abdominal trust
Basic First Aid
Choking management for unconscious
patient
Check a patient AVPU-code and LLF. If no response lie
a patient in flat left side position
Open air way by using air way opening technique
After choking management a patient not gait
consciousness they perform CPR
Basic First Aid
Choking management for infant
A, Chest Thrust
A seated position and hold the infant face down on
your arm. which is resting on your thigh .support the
infants head and neck with your hand and place the
head lower than trunk
The combination of gravity and back blows should
release the blocked object
Chest Thrust
Basic First Aid
B ,Abdominal Thrust
Turn the infant face up on your fore arm. Resting on
your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the
infant still is NOT breathing
Using two finger placed at the center of the infant s
breast bone give quick chest compressions
Repat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing
does not resume
If no response start infant or childe CPR
Five Back slap
Basic First Aid
Choking hazards includes
Hard raw vegetables

Hard candy
Chewing gum
Peanut
Basic First Aid
Prevention of choking
