Racism consists of discrimination and prejudice against people based on their ethnicity or skin color. Throughout history, there have been cruel racist events such as slavery, human zoos, and the Holocaust where people were mistreated or killed based on their race. While laws and civil rights movements have reduced overt racism, more subtle forms of racism still exist today in countries like the US and Brazil through issues like police violence against black people. However, increasing representation of minorities in media is helping to fight racism and promote acceptance of people from all backgrounds.

Nº6/10ºC What is racism? • Racism consists of discrimination and prejudice (directly or indirectly) against people or groups because of their ethnicity or color. This discrimination is based on the false idea that the human species is divided into different races being one of them considered superior to the others. Racism and History • Throughout humanity there have been several cruel racist events, for example people of other ethnicities have been made slaves, mistreated and treated like animals. Here are some examples: . Slave ships (transporting slaves (usually black people) in inhumane conditions . Human zoos - people of other ethnicities (indigenous,black...) were exposed as if they were attractions. The argument was that the African black man would be the biological link between the Western white man and the monkey. Racism and History • Holocaust- people who did not correspond to the Aryan ideal or were Jewish were sent to concentration camps where they were either killed or forced into slave labor till death. • Until the 1960s black people for example could not live in the same spaces as white people having to stay in separate spaces for example on the bus. (Rosa Parks- mencionar).People of color had no access to civil rights, were often killed for no reason or even beaten • Over time the black people started to fight for the rights they deserved. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, Black Panthers and others helped fight racism, obtain civil rights and fight police violence. • Although we have had a big change about racism, it cannot be said that it is completely extinct..., the U.S. and Brazil for example are still very racist countries where several innocent black people end up being killed for no reason. • Portugal is not an extremely racist country but it is not completely free of this prejudice. Because it is a very "old" country many people still continue to have completely racist thoughts and attitudes.
