Introduction 3

Microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) are a class of materials that

have the capacity to convert the energy of microwaves within a certain
frequency range into other forms of energy, such as dielectric, magnetic,
or thermal energy.

In doing so, these materials reduce the scattering cross section of

microwaves or attenuate the energy of incident microwaves.

Block diagram showing the importance and
applications of MAMs:
Working principle:
When microwave is incident on a material surface, it experiences
three processes: reflection, absorption, and transmission. So, the
essence of microwave absorption (MA) by microwave absorbers
is anti-reflection.
A microwave absorber is filled with dielectric ferromagnetic
materials. As a microwave strikes these materials, the wave
becomes attenuated and loses energy. The energy loss is due to a
conversion from EMI energy to heat energy via phase
cancellation.
MAMs with broad-bandwidth response:
• Graphene/magnetic composites (Co15Fe85@C/reduced
graphene oxide (RGO) multicomponent etc.)
• MXene/magnetic composites(CoFe2O4-decorated Ti3C2
MXene composites etc. )
MXene is a 2D carbon/nitride material

• Dielectric/magnetic composites(Fe3O4@TiO2 microspheres

etc.)
• Broadband MAMs with the 1D morphology(1D SiC@C hybrid
nanowires etc.)
• Broadband MAMs with the 2D morphology (NiO-Ni nanoplates
etc.)
MAMs with broad-bandwidth response:
• Porous-foam-structured MAMs with broad-bandwidth response
(3D free-standing GF etc. )
• Multilayer-structured microwave absorbers with broad-
bandwidth response (SrFe12O19 microfibers as the outer layer, α-
Fe microfibers as the interlayer, and Ni 0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) microfibers
as the inner layer)
• Metamaterial-based microwave absorbers with broad-
bandwidth response (a male resin mold with the designed
periodical structure, and used the mixture of hollow
carbon/MXene/Mo2C (HCMM) powder and silica gel as the
filler of the female mold )
Parameter for a good MAM:

Absorption efficiency greater than 90%, a reflection loss (RL)

lower than −10 dB, or a reflectivity below 0.1 is defined as the
effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) and is a yardstick for a
good MAM.
Reflection Loss(RL)(dB) Vs Frequency(GHz) curves for some
good MAMs:
(Plasmonic structure covering, a resistive frequency
selective surface, a polymethacrylimide foam spacer,
and a metal backplane)
Applications
• Communication security
• Electronic reliability
• Healthcare
• Military stealth
Conclusion

With the rapid development of modern electronics and the widespread use of microwave radiation in
everyday life, high-performance MAMs with a broad-bandwidth response have received increased
attention. So, to satisfy the requirements of MAMs for use in practical applications, we need to focus on
the following areas:

• Improvement of magnetic permeability of the materials in GHz ranges

•Magnetic metamaterials e.g., FeCoNiMn0.5Al0.2 high entropy alloys, FeCoNi carbon fiber etc.
•Flexible microwave absorbers
•Multifunctional MAMs
• MAMs with dynamic adaptive structures
