DEFINITION
• Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory
disorder of the pancreas.
• Leading cause of hospital admission for
gastrointestinal (GI) disorders & the incidence is rising.
• Majority have a self-limiting disease, those with
severe AP account for 2.4% of ICU beds occupied in
England and Wales, and with a in-hospital mortality of
about 40%.

CAUSES OF ACUTE PANCREATITIS
MECHANISM
•OBSTRUCTIVE- gall stones or biliary sludge
-After ERCP
-Cystic fibrosis

•TOXIC -Chronic alcohol use


-hypertriglyceridemia
-drugs ( immunosuppressants, steroids, azathioprine )
-diuretics(furosemide ,thiazide )
- antibiotics(metronidazole)sulphonamides
•ISCHAEMIA/REPERFUSION shock states,cardiopulmonary bypass surgery
•INFECTIONS- viruses :cytomegalovirus,mumps,cocksackie B and Epstein barr
virus.pararasites,ascaris
•TRAUMA-blunt or penetrating trauma
•OTHERS- idiopathic,autoimmune(schlerosing cholangitis)
