ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would extremely like to thanks my

chemistry madam Mrs. Itishree Samal
(PGT Chemistry ), for her kind and
valuable support. Without her guidance it
would have practically impossible on my
part to complete this assignment.

I would like to thanks our Principal Sir,

Mr. S.K. Bhoi for his encouragement. I
would also like to acknowledge CBSE
authorization for which I could make out
the facts which I was ignorant about the
project.

I would also like to thanks my parents for

providing me with all that I needed.

Mohr’s salt or ammonium ferrous

sulphate is the inorganic compound
having the formula- FeSO4.(NH4)2
SO4 .6H2O containing two different
cations - Fe2+ and NH4+. It is known as
a double salt of ferrous sulphate FeSO4.
and ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2 SO4]. It
is a common laboratory reagent.

Mohr’s salt has a molar mass of

392.21 g/mol and it appears as a blue
green solid. Its crystals do not lose
water of crystallization be efflorescence
nor it oxidizes in air. It is stable salt.
APPARATUS
REQUIRED

1.Two beakers ( 250 ml )

2.China dish
3.Funnel
4.Funnel stand
5.Glass rod
6.Wash bottle
7.Tripod stand
8.Wire gauge
9.Burner
CHEMICAL REQUIRED

1.Ferrous Sulphate
Crystals (FeSO4)

2.Ammonium
Sulphate Crystals
[(NH4)2SO4]
3.Dilute Sulphate Acid
(H2SO4)
4. Ethyl Alcohol
THEORY

Mohr’s salt is prepared by dissolving

an equimolar mixture of hydrated
ferrous sulphate and ammonium
sulphate in water containing a
resulting solution to crystallization
sulphate FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O
separate out.

While dissolving FeSO4 in warm

water, about 2-3 ml of dil. Sulphuric
acid is added to prevent hydrolysis of
FeSO4.
CHEMICAL EQUATION

FeSO4.7H2O + (NH4)2SO4 - FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O + H2O

Ferrous Ammonium
Sulphate Sulphate

PROCEDURE

A 250 ml beaker was taken and washed with

water.7.0 gms of ferrous sulphate and 3.5 gms
ammonium sulphate crystals are transferred to it.
About 2-3 ml of dil.Sulphuric acid was added to it
in order to prevent hydrolysis of feso4.

1. In another beaker about 20 ml of water was

boiled for about 5 minutes to expel dissolved
air.
2. The boiling hot water was added to the contents
in the first beaker in small instalments at a
time. It is stirred with a glass rod until the salts
have completed dissolved.
3. The solution was filtered to remove undissolved
impurities and the filtrate was transferred to a
china dish.
4. The solution in the china dish was heated for
sometimes to concentrate it to the
crystallization point.
5. The china dish containing saturated solution is
placed over a beaker full of cold water. On
cooling, crystals of Mohr’s salt separate out.
6. The mother liquor was decanted off quickly.
The crystals in the china dish washed with a
small quantity of alcohol.
7. The crystals are dried by placing them between
filter paper pads.
OBSERVATIONS

1.Weight of crystals
obtained= 5.6gm
2.Expected yield= 10gm
3.Colour of the crystals=
Light green
4.Shape of the crystals=
monoclinic
PRECAUTIONS

• Don’t allow the crystals to cool

rapidly because slow cooling gives
good crystals.
• During crystallization, solution
should not be disturbed and it
should be covered with watch glass.
• While preparing crystals of Mohr’s
salt, heating of solution be done for
short time only. Long heating may
cause the formation of Fe3+ ions.
These ions would form ferric
ammonium sulphate.
• Dry crystal should be kept in a dry
and air tight container, otherwise it
will get oxidised.
• Do not forget ta add dil. H2SO4 while
dissolving FeSO4
• If the solution becomes yellow in
colour, throw it and start the process
again.
