Introduction: Results:
MTT
Compounds which contain calcium hydroxide are the method of choice
1.4
for direct pulp capping in the primary dentition. In the last years
1.2
universally usable products like MTA and Biodentine™ got more

popular. They also release calcium hydroxide ions upon contact with
water. 0.8

The common opinion states that the high ph-value of the products
used for direct pulp capping induces the tertiary dentin formation.

tissue compared with an untreated control.

control Biodentine ™ MTA calcium hydroxide zincoxid eugenol

Figure: cells after 72 hours with testmedia

Materials and Methods: Conclusion:

• human dental pulp cells from primary teeth Compared to the control the proliferation rate was significantly increased
• test bodies of in case of calcium hydroxide after 24h (p<0.05, Tukey´s test). After 48h
and 72h the rate decreased significantly compared to the control group
(p<0.05). In case of Biodentine™ and zinc oxide eugenol a significantly
reduced proliferation rate could be observed at all times (24h, 48h and
Biodentine™ MTA calcium hydroxide zincoxid eugenol 72h). Regarding the groups with MTA no difference of the proliferation
according to the instructions of the manufacturer (A=14mm²) rate could be recorded after 24h. However, after 48h and 72h the rate
• 3 ml medium (α-MEM) was added to each test body also decreased significantly in the MTA group.
• incubation of human dental pulp cells with test medium
Within the limitation of this investigation it can be concluded, that the use
• proliferation was evaluated by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,
of calcium hydroxide showed a positive effect on the proliferation rate of
5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) viability analysis at different
human pulpal tissues. The data implies that MTA, Biodentine™ and zinc
times (24h, 48h and 72h)
oxide eugenol could not support the proliferation of the used cell cultures
• statistical analysis: Tukey’s test
significantly.
