Have you ever met someone whos arrogant

or self-centered?

Narcissus, a figure from Greek mythology; fell in love with his own
reflection in a pool of water and couldn’t pull himself away. He stayed
right beside that pool deep in self-absorption until he died.

Narcissism became known as self-centered and was developed after

this Greek myth.

WHAT IS NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER ?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is characterized by a

persistent pattern of grandiosity, fantasies of unlimited power

or importance, and the need for admiration or special

treatment. (Kacel et al., 2018).

Who do You think was the

Narcissist?
slidesmania.com

Did you know?

According to researchers, up to 5% of people

suffer from narcissistic personality disorder. Many
people have narcissistic traits, however around
75% of people who are diagnosed with narcissistic
personality disorder are men. (Hickling, et
al.,2013).

The rates show that NPD

characteristics were 7.7% more
prevalent in men. Out of the
total number of participants
4.8% women showed NPD
traits and characteristics.

What are the causes of Narcissistic

Personality Disorder?

Though the exact causes of narcissistic personality

disorder (NPD) are not fully discovered, it is believed to be
influenced by a combination of neurological, genetical,
psychological and environmental factors.
People who experienced separation, divorce or widowed are
also among the individuals with greater rates of NPD

Culture and childhood experiences may also play a role in

causing NPD

NPD may develop in adults because of negative childhood

experiences, such as rejection or criticism by parents.
At the same time, too much praise from parents could also
lead to NPD.

How do we
diagnose
Narcissistic
Personality
Disorder?
slidesmania.com

There are similarities between narcissistic personality

disorder (NPD) and other personality disorders.
Which means a person may receive multiple personality
disorder diagnoses simultaneously.

For example:
A person can be diagnosed with
NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder),
BPD(Bipolar Personality Disorder) and Anxiety at the
same time.

This may make diagnosing more difficult. Therefore an NPD diagnosis is typically
made considering the following:

● Your symptoms and how they affect your life.

● A medical examination to rule out any physical issues being the

source of your problems.

● A comprehensive psychological assessment

● Recommendations in the American Psychiatric Association's

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

What kind of Therapy do

you think can be used to
treat NPD?
slidesmania.com

Therapy also can be provided on an ongoing basis or be short-term to help

you manage during times of stress or crisis.

Psychotherapy Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

with healthier ones.

Mentalization-based therapy (MBT)

Improving your ability to reflect on yourself, as

well as the thoughts and emotions of others.

Other Treatments would include

Lifestyle changes and Medication.

It’s recommended to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced

diet, exercising, and avoiding alcohol or other substances that can
increase problematic behaviours.

There are currently no approved drugs by the Food and Drug

Administration (FDA) that are intended to treat NPD.

Nevertheless, a physician might decide to address specific

symptoms, particularly if you have been diagnosed with anxiety
or depression in addition to your current illness.

It’s not so easy to stop having NPD.

That said, with the right therapy, you can learn to
recognize your triggers and learn coping mechanisms or
behavioral changes that can make a lasting, positive
impact on your life.

Is there a cure for Narscissm?

slidesmania.com

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY RATE ?

There has not been any successful recoveries of NPD.

For Narcissistic personality disorder there isn’t an actual cure nor a set recovery method.
The disorder is centralized around psychotherapy; with that establishing a treatment for
individuals with NPD may be challenging as they tend to keep away from it, critic it, and
shun the treatment.

Increased treatment strategies are moderately expanding their focus on raising,

interpretating and having interactions along with self-enhancing and self-depleting
vulnerability, and between comprehensible and emotional narcissistic personality
functioning. As well as on the individual's life and interpersonal factors.
