Introduction, Key Responsibilities
While interning at the Fellowship Home my activities performed
included: being a concierge in which I handled the desk and
administrative duties. I professionally answered the phone
concerning any questions families and healthcare providers had.
I later helped out the activities directors lead arts and crafts,
Bingo, exercise, the outing to Kroger, and Happy Hour.
As an intern at the Fellowship Home, I recognized a need for
more activities that would promote socialization and the
emotional well-being of the residents.

Public Health Issue
Public health is defined as: “The science of protecting and
improving the health of people and their communities.”
(CDC, 2023)
This work is accomplished by promoting healthy lifestyles,
and researching disease and injury prevention.
A concern with the protecting entire populations health.
9
Determining the First Objective
• Activity implementation falls under a Public Health issue since loneliness and
depression are common in the elderly population.
• In 2019, nearly forty percent of the residents surveyed in a Polish nursing home
were affected by loneliness. Trybusińska, D., & Saracen, A. (2019). Loneliness in the
Context of Quality of Life of Nursing Home Residents. Open medicine (Warsaw,
Poland), 14, 354–361. https://doi.org/10.1515/med-2019-0035
• Public Health Concepts:
• Research Methods and statistics-Data analysis, qualitative data and quantitative
data. Survey creation.
• Personal Health and fitness.
• Social determinants of health
10
Project
• I decide to do activity implementation since there was a need to increase the
resident’s autonomy, social interactions, and the mental health of the residents.
• My role: I created a survey with forty three questions that would gauge the resident’s
activity interests and areas for improvement.
• Planning: Drafted a survey, interviewed a resident as a trial run, and revised the
survey.
• Implementation: The survey results were entered into an Excel Spreadsheet and
printed out and placed in a resource binder for the current activities directors and for
future interns to utilize.
• Evaluation:
• Qualitative and quantitative data

Dementia Education
What I learned:
• Alzheimer's Association:
• Dementia is an overall term for a particular group of
symptoms. The characteristic symptoms of dementia
are difficulties with memory, language, problem-solving
and other thinking skills. Dementia has several causes
These causes reflect specific changes in the brain.
Alzheimer’s disease is one cause of dementia. The brain
changes of Alzheimer’s disease include the
accumulation of the abnormal proteins beta-amyloid and
phosphorylated tau, as well as the degeneration of
neurons. The brain changes of Alzheimer’s disease are
the most common contributor to dementia.

More Activities
• Led Exercise

with leading this.
• Resident’s answered flu shot and COVID-19 questionnaire
with my assistance.
• Issues dealt with: COVID-19 and Flu Shot Implementation
(Problems)

Overall Impact
• Skills gained
• Microsoft Excel.
• Surveying.
• Leadership and team work.
• Patience, compassion, and empathy.
My impact:
Increased resident participation. Creation of a binder with the resident’s
activities interests.

My takeaway
I was able to help decorate the facility for fall and Christmas!
Decorating was wonderful since a resident who normally keeps to
herself came out and the decorations add a cheeriness to the
Fellowship Home. The resident’s appreciate the decorations and
the residents enjoy watching the decorators decorate.
The interactions I have had with the resident’s are special and I will
always remember their graciousness and a zeal for life.
