HELICAL MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION
 The Helical model of communication was developed by Frank
Dance in 1967.
 He thought of communication similar to helix. Helix is a smooth
curve like a spring that goes upward and downwards. This model
presents the concept of time where continuousness of
communication process is very important. In helical model,
communication is dynamic process. Communication progresses
as an individual gets older and his experience and vocabulary.
 According to the model, the process evolves from the very birth of
an individual and continues till the existing moment
 All living entities start communicating from the very first day of
their origin.
HELICAL MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION
STRENGTHS
THE HELIX IMPLIES THAT:

1. Communication is continuous, unrepeatable, additive and

accumulative.
2. All experience contributes to the shape of the unfolding
moment; there is no break in the action , no fixed beginning no
pure redundancy, no closure.
3. All communicative experience in the product of learned , non
repeatable events which are defined in ways the organism
develops to be self-consistent and socially meaningful.
WEAKNESSES
1. May not be a model at all; too few variables.
2. Generates questions, but leaves much
unanswered.

The model bring problem of abstraction into the

open
DIFFERENCE WITH OTHER
MODELS
This model does not have any literal
features or elements therefore it is an
abstract model.
Using helix symbolizes the dynamics of
human communication
EXAMPLE OF A HELICAL MODEL
OF COMMUNICATION
When a child is born the only means of communication for him is crying,
he cries for everything like hunger, pain, cold etc.. As the child grows the
means of communication become wider and broader. He learns to make
noises then he learns a language to obtain attention and to fulfil his needs.
EXPLANATION:

It illustrates the development of an

individual throughout life, as their
knowledge base deepens and expands
through communication; thus the
helical model can be seen as dynamic
Child ( Day 1) Communication Evolves

Communication Continues

(Communication Depends On Past Activities)

(Current Day) Communication Continues With Modification

HELICAL MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION
Frank Dance explains the communication process based on his
Helix structure and compares it with communication. Helix
Structure, the bottom or starting is very small then it gradually
moves upward in a back and forth circular motion which forms the
bigger in the top and it is still moves further. The whole process
takes some time to reach. As like helix, the communication process
starts very slowly and defined small circle only. The communicators
shared information only with a small portion of themselves to their
relationships. Its gradually develops into next level but which will
take some time to reach and expanding its boundaries to the next
level. Later the communicators commits more and shared more
portions by themselves.
