(Modernization and the Modern Society)
(Enclosure Movement)
https://slideplayer.com/slide/13685546/
Karl Marx: “ 의회적 형태의 수탈”

- “Angel in the House”

• It was a town of red brick, or of brick that would have been red if the smoke and ashes had allowed it; but
as matters stood, it was a town of unnatural red and black like the painted face of a savage. It was a town
of machinery and tall chimneys, out of which interminable serpents of smoke trailed themselves for ever
and ever, and never got uncoiled. It had a black canal in it, and a river that ran purple with ill-smelling
dye, and vast piles of building full of windows where there was a rattling and a trembling all day long, and
where the piston of the steam-engine worked monotonously up and down, like the head of an elephant in a
state of melancholy madness. It contained several large streets all very like one another, and many small
streets still more like one another, inhabited by people equally like one another, who all went in and out at
the same hours, with the same sound upon the same pavements, to do the same work, and to whom every
day was the same as yesterday and to-morrow, and every year the counterpart of the last and the next.

Shirley by Charlotte Brontë (1849)
http://blogs.reading.ac.uk/merl/files/2014/03/Threshing.jpg thehundredbooks.com/Tess_of_the_dUrbervilles.htm
Close under the eaves of the stack, and as yet barely visible, was the red tyrant that the women had
come to serve — a timber-framed construction, with straps and wheels appertaining — the thresh-
ing-machine which, whilst it was going, kept up a despotic demand upon the endurance of their
muscles and nerves. A little way off there was another indistinct figure; this one black, with a sus-
tained hiss that spoke of strength very much in reserve. The long chimney running up beside an
ash-tree, and the warmth which radiated from the spot, explained without the necessity of much
daylight that here was the engine which was to act as the PRIMUM MOBILE of this little world.
By the engine stood a dark motionless being, a sooty and grimy embodiment of tallness, in a sort of
trance, with a heap of coals by his side: it was the engineman. The isolation of his manner and
colour lent him the appearance of a creature from Tophet, who had strayed into the pellucid smoke-
lessness of this region of yellow grain and pale soil, with which he had nothing in common, to
amaze and to discompose its aborigines.
