INTRODUCTION

Sugar is produced in India since ancient times, the sugar making is mentioned in the Atharva
Veda.

India is the world’s second largest producer of sugar after Brazil.

It is the second largest Agro-based industry in India.

It creates 7.5% of the employment in India.

The recent trends shows that the sugar consumption has been constant.
HISTORY OF SUGAR INDUSTRY
• Being the world’s largest consumer of sugar India had 703
sugar mills.
• The first sugar industry in India was setup in 1840, Betia
(Bihar).
• Though it was known, the modern industry was introduced
by the Dutch in 1840.
• This attempt had failed. Then the Britishers succeded in
1903

• As sugarcane looses it’s sucrose as the time passes
it is very much necessary to use the fresh once .
