WHAT SCOUTING MEANS TO YOU?
Scouting is all about building confidence and self-
esteem, learning important life skills and
leadership skills, team building, outdoor
adventure, education, and fun! Scouts learn how
to make good choices and to take responsibility
for their actions so that they are prepared for
their adult life as independent persons.
Who started Scouts and why?

Robert Baden-Powell
• Scouting began in 1907 and was founded by Robert
Baden-Powell, a lieutenant-general in the British
Army, serving from 1876 until 1902 in India and Africa
with 20 boys at Brownsea Island, United Kingdom was
a great success.. In 1899, during the Second Boer War
in South Africa, Baden-Powell successfully defended
the town of Mafeking in a siege that lasted seven
months. 1908: Baden-Powell published “Scouting for
Boys”, which was an immediate hit and has since sold
over 100 million copies.
What is the purpose of the Boy Scouts?
The Scouting program has specific objectives,
commonly referred to as the “Aims of
Scouting.” They are character development,
leadership development, citizenship training,
and personal fitness. Leadership development
is also one of Scoutings eight methods
contributing to both good character and good
citizenship.

WHAT IS THE BOY SCOUT MOTTO?

Be Prepared
Robert Baden-Powell, the English
soldier who founded the Boy Scouts,
published the motto “Be Prepared” in
his 1908 handbook, Scouting for Boys.
He wrote that to be prepared meant
“You are always in a state of readiness
in mind and body to do your duty”.
