FACTORIAL
NOTATION
LESSON 2 QUARTER 3 MODULE 1
OBJECTIVES
• Define factorial notation
• Find the value of the factorial expression

• Evaluate properties of factorials to simplify and

evaluate expressions

• Apply the concept of factorial notation in real life situation

Activity 1 (Pass the Ball)

1. You take a survey with five “yes” or “no”

answers. How many different ways could you
complete the survey?
Activity 1 (Pass the Ball)

2. Grace loves to eat salad! How many salads can

she put together if she can choose one from each
of the following: two types of lettuce, 4 types of
vegetables and 7 types of dressing?
What's New

In considering the number of possibilities of

various events, particular scenario typically
emerge in different problems.
What's New

Can be expresses as:

4x3x2x1 -------------------------
8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1------------
5x4x3x2x1------------
3x2x1------------
What's New

Do you think there’s a shorter way to express this multiplication of

consecutive whole numbers?
What's New

The notation is known as factorial

n! is read as n factorials
Fctorial Notation

If n is posistive integer, n factorial denoted by

n! is a product of all positive integers less than
or equal to n. It is defined by

n! = n(n-1)(n-2)...(2)(1)
As special case: 0! = 1
