The New Naga Hammadi Barrage

And
The Hydropower-Plant Project
Brief Summary

the Existing Naga Hammad Barrage

 The Existing Naga Hammadi Barrage is
located at 359.500 km. of Aswan
Reservoir

 This barrage has been constructed to lift

water level to provide enough water level
for both of the Western and Eastern Naga
Hammad canals and two pumps which
irrigate approximately 750.000 feddans in
Qena, Sohage and Assuit Governorates
The existing Naga Hammadi Barrage
I t has been constructed in 1930,
and consist of :
• 100.00 bays to allow passing flow.

• Two navigation locks:

1-The old one is 16.00 m wide, 70 m long and
draught with 1.5 m.
2-The new one is 17 m wide, 175 m long and
draught with 2.5 m.

• Two swing steels cross the downstream

heads of the navigation locks.

• The maximum level of water at the front is

65.40 m.

• The road spans the barrage is 6 m wide.

The Old Naga Hammadi Barrage
Reasons lead to think in constructing the New
Barrage
• The existing Barrage has been constructed since 1930.

• Some problems such as wearing concrete among stones

and some cracks.

• Meeting the increased requirements of water , wherever

it is expected that the area located near the old barrage
will be increased to be 750.000 feddans in the near future

• The facility of navigation by constructing two navigation

locks with more dimension to contain the increased
movement of navigation.

• Constructing high bridge with cargo 70 tones to meet the

increased traffic and connecting the eastern and western
roads between Cairo - Aswan.

• Benefit from the balance difference upon the barrage in

The New Naga Hammadi Barrage
• The New Barrage is located at the north of the
existing barrage at 3.5 km.

This location is chosen for the following

reasons
• It lies behind the existing barrage (i.e. in the low
level of water).

• The least width of the River Nile.

• It complies with the Hydraulic studies.

• Clay layer is suitable to construct the Barrage.

The Project Goals
Replacing the New Barrage instead of the old one
to meet the increased requirements of irrigation
water.

Control the water released through the barrage to

maintain the balance difference in generating
clean electrical energy (about 460 GW).

Enhance navigation by constructing 2 Navigation

Locks large enough to accommodate two of the
largest ships operating on the Nile in the same
time.

Have a new road spanning the barrage with a

capacity of 70 tones.

Improve living standard in the project area by

creating job opportunities for the extent of the
project execution.

In addition to a group of Egyptian and

European companies as subcontractors.

READY MIX EGYPT CO. (subsidiary of OCI) is

one of those subcontractors for which the concrete
supply has been assigned.
CONCRETE
The primary approach to design
concrete appropriate for a water
structures should be for durability
shall be based on the need to
achieve a high quality and relatively
impermeable concrete with a low
heat especially when using mass
concrete like in our case.
Secondary approach for such structures
always comes to be the concrete strength.

For such approaches a blend of Fly Ash and

HSC has been used for more durable (low
alkali, low heat) concrete, in addition to
super plasticizers & well graded washed
aggregates for achieving high performance
& workability.
