MOTHER
OF
GOD
DIVINE
MOTHERHOOD
This Dogma is referred to by
the original Greek title of Mary:
Theotokos, which means “God-
bearer.” Mary of Nazareth is clearly
the mother of Jesus. She bore Him in
her womb, gave birth to Him, and
raised Him with the help of her
chaste spouse, Joseph.
Hist ry
The title "Mother of God" in Christian theology
highlights Mary, Jesus' mother, giving birth to the
Son of God, a central concept in the Incarnation.
Rooted in the New Testament, especially Luke, the
Annunciation narrative details Mary conceiving
through the Holy Spirit, affirming Jesus' dual nature.
Coined during the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD,
the term "Theotokos" (The Greek word Theotokos
means to bear God) stressed Mary's role in uniting
Christ's divine and human natures. Over centuries,
Mary's veneration as the Mother of God deepened,
notably in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions,
reinforced by dogmas like the Immaculate
Conception and the Assumption.
