HOW IS THE HISTORY OF SEATTLE?
 SEATTLE HISTORY
Archaeological excavations have found that the Seattle area was previously
uninhabited for approximately 4,000 years. By the time European settlers first
arrived, the natives (now called the Duwamish ) had occupied at least seventeen
villages around Elliott Bay . [4] In 1851, a large group led by Luther Collins opened a
site at the mouth of the Duwamish River. They claimed the area as their own
on September 14, 1851. [5] Thirteen days later, several members of Collins'
group met with scout members of the Denny Party , the group that eventually
found Seattle. [6]Members of Denny's group finally claimed land at Aiki Point
on September 28, 1951. [7] After a difficult winter, most members of Denny's
group moved to Elliott Bay and found the village of "Dewamps" or "Duwamps"
which is now the location of Pioneer Square . [7] Charles Terry and John Low
settled at the original site of the discovery and formed a village called "New
York" which was later renamed "New York Alki" in April 1853. For several
years, New York Alki and Duwamps competed for dominance. New York Alki
was eventually abandoned by its residents who joined other residents of
Duwamps.
