WAVES
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner is expected to:
 infer that waves carry energy;
 differentiate transverse from longitudinal waves, and
mechanical from electromagnetic waves;
 define frequency, wavelength and amplitude;
 compare the characteristics of a wave;
 relate speed, frequency and wavelength;
 solve mathematical problems involving wavelength and
frequency; and
 manifest to be as sensitive as a wave to other people’s
feelings.

WORD SEARCH
Look for the words that are being defined by the
following:
1.It refers to the length of the entire path that the object
travelled.
2.It is the shortest path between the object’s two positions.
3.It refers to speed with direction.
4.It is defined as the distance travelled in a period of time.
5.It is the change in speed or velocity for a time interval.

WAVES
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
MECHANICAL WAVE
- Wave that requires a medium to
propagate.
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE
- wave that does not require a medium to
propagate.

Particles Propagate
WAVES
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
TRANSVERSE WAVE
- the propagation of the particles is
perpendicular to the direction to which the wave
travels.

Waves
Crest – highest point on the wave
Trough – lowest point on the wave
Amplitude – distance from crest or trough to the
equilibrium position
Wavelength – the distance from two consecutive
and similar parts of the wave (crest to crest or
trough to trough)

Characteristics of a
Wave
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
All waves share certain characteristics.
1. Amplitude
2. Wavelength (𝜆)
3. Frequency (f) – the number of cycles per
unit time.
- Unit is Hertz (Hz)
- 1Hz = 1 wave/second
4. Period (T) – time it takes to complete 1 wave
- Unit is seconds
-T=
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
5. Speed of a wave – determined by the number
of waves passing a point per second and length
of the wave.
- Speed in any given medium is constant.
- Speed = frequency x wavelength
- In symbols
- Speed =
- In symbols
- Unit is meters/second

anchored boat every 3 seconds. The distance
between each crest is 27 m. What is the speed of
the wave?

SUMMARY
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Waves
 Waves transfer energy without transferring matter.
 Waves may be mechanical or electromagnetic.
 Waves may be transverse or longitudinal.
 Transverse waves have the following parts: crest,
trough, amplitude and wavelength.
 Longitudinal waves have the following parts:
compression and rarefaction.
 The different characteristics of waves are
frequency, period, amplitude, wavelength and
speed.
