FACTORS AFFECTING

SECOND
LANGUAGE LEARNING

GROUP 5
FACTORS AFFECTING
SECOND
LANGUAGE LEARNING

ARE VARIED AND CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON AN INDIVIDUAL'S

ABILITY TO ACQUIRE A NEW LANGUAGE.
HERE IS A MORE DETAILED EXPLANATION OF SOME OF THESE FACTORS:
Motivation & Attitude

 This factor refers to the learner's desire and determination to learn a second language.
Motivation can be intrinsic (personal interest or enjoyment) or extrinsic (career
opportunities or academic requirements). Positive attitudes towards language learning
also play a crucial role in successful language acquisition.

 For example: A student who loves watching Japanese anime may be highly motivated to
learn the Japanese language
Aptitude

 Aptitude refers to an individual's natural ability or talent for learning languages. Some
people have a greater innate ability to pick up new languages quickly, while others may
struggle more. Aptitude can manifest in various ways, such as phonetic sensitivity,
grammatical intuition, or memory retention. For instance, a person with high aptitude may
grasp the pronunciation and grammar rules of a new language easily, making their
learning progress faster.
Personality

 Different personality traits can influence language learning. Research suggests that
extroverted individuals tend to be more comfortable with conversation practice and may have
an easier time developing speaking skills. On the other hand, introverted individuals may excel
in reading and writing tasks due to their attention to detail and can play a role in second
language acquisition (SLA) in several ways.
Intelligence

 Intelligence allows learners to grasp complex linguistic patterns and comprehend the
language more efficiently. For instance, a person with strong logical-mathematical
intelligence might find it easier to understand and apply grammatical rules in a new
language.
 General cognitive abilities, such as memory, problem-solving skills, and analytical
thinking, can influence language learning.
Learners Preferences and Beliefs

 Individual preferences and beliefs about language learning can impact learning outcomes.
Some learners may prefer visual learning methods with visual aids, while others may
benefit more from auditory or kinesthetic approaches. Similarly, learners' beliefs about
their own ability to learn a language can affect their motivation and confidence.

 For example, a student who believes they are capable of becoming fluent in a second
language may be more likely to invest time and effort in their studies.
Age

 Age is a significant factor in language learning. Younger learners tend to have more
flexible and adaptable minds, making it easier for them to acquire new languages.
Research suggests that children who start learning a second language at an early age
generally develop native-like proficiency.
