VOWELS.
What do you know?

- Vowels are speech sounds that are created by, the

relatively free passage of breath through the larynx and
oral cavity, usually forming the most prominent and
central sound of a syllable.

- When speaking a vowel there is no built up pressure,

the sound is simply shaped by the position of the tongue.
HOW VOWELS ARE MADE.

Vowels are generally characterised by three

different criteria:
- Height - the position of the tongue in the mouth

relative to the roof of the mouth

- Tongue - the position of the tongue in either the

front or back of the mouth and

- Roundness - the shape of the lips as the vowel

sound is being made.

MONOTHONGS

A monophthong is a single vowel spoken without

change in quality throughout the course of a
syllable. For example: Bed
Or
two written vowels representing a single sound. For
example: as oa in boat
DIPHTHONGS
A vowel sound that glides from one vowel sound to another is
called a diphthong. They are often referred to as gliding vowels.

TRIPHTHONGS
A triphthong is a sequence of three vowels making up one syllable.
