Problem 1
• If the magnitude of the couple moment acting on the pipe assembly is
50 N.m, determine the magnitude of the couple forces applied to each
wrench. The pipe assembly lies in the x-y plane.
Problem 1: Solution

• Draw FBD
• Find the couple moment of (F)
• Taking the moment of (+F) acting at A
• Taking the moment of (-F) acting at B

• Use the position vector rAB or rBA

• The couple moment of () acting at A

A (0.2, 0.3, 0)
B (0.3, 0.8, 0)
Problem 1: Solution

• The magnitude of [M] 

• Given:  F = 98.1 N

A (0.2, 0.3, 0)
B (0.3, 0.8, 0)
Problem 1: Solution

Alternative Way

• The couple moment of () acting at B

A (0.2, 0.3, 0)
B (0.3, 0.8, 0)
Problem 2
• Determine the minimum cable force T and the critical angle θ which
will cause the tow truck to start tipping. Assume that the truck is
parked and will not slip at B. The truck has a total mass of 4Mg and
mass center at G.
Problem 2: Solution
• Draw FBD

• Required:
• T (min. cable tension), θ
• The tow truck start tipping  NA = 0

+ • Equilibrium equations
Problem 2: Solution

• At the minimum tension (T) and the critical angle (θ) which will cause tipping 
The change in (T) w.r.t. (θ) must be equal ZERO

• ;

• (divide by cos θ)

•   θ = 63.43̊

• The minimum cable force 

Problem 3
• Find the internal force at point C.

• Solution
Draw FBD

+ Equilibrium Equations:
0.5 x 100 x 12 = 600 N

;
A B
– 600 (8) + RB (12) = 0  RB = 400 N
8m 4m

; RB
RA
+RA – 600 + RB = 0  RA = 200 N
Problem 3: Solution 100 N/m
Wx
Internal force at point C:
100 N/m  12 m A B
Wx N/m  7 m ; C
7m 5m

+
Wx = 100 x 7/12 = 58.33 N/m 12m

Point Force = 0.5 x 7 x 58.33 = 204.15 N

;
Wx
– 200 (7) + 204.15 (2.33) + MC = 0
A C
MC = + 923.6 N.m
7m

VC = -4.17 N 4.66m 2.33m
Practice Problem

• Determine the resultant internal

loadings acting on the cross section
through point B of the signpost. The
post is fixed to the ground, and uniform
pressure of 500 N/m2 acts perpendicular
to the face of the sign.
