ANGLES AND

ANGULAR
MEASURES
GROUP 4
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

• Define angles, angular measures, terminal angles and

coterminal angles
• Convert a degree measure to a radian measure and
vice versa
• Illustrate angles in standard position and coterminal
angles
• Solve for the coterminal angles
WHAT YOU'LL
LEARN TODAY

• Angle Measure
• Units of Measurement of
Angles
• Converting Radians to
Degrees
• Coterminal Angles
What is Angle Measure?
An angle measure is the measure of the angle created by two rays or arms at a shared
vertex.

In trigonometry, an angle is formed

by rotating a ray around its vertex
from one position, called the initial
side of the angle, to another, called
the terminal side.
Angle Measure

The amount of opening of an angle is its measure, also called angular measure.
Units of Measurement of Angles

One of the most significant notions in geometry is the concept of angle. Although the
ideas of equality, sums, and differences of angles are fundamental and employed
throughout geometry, trigonometry is a discipline based on angle measurement.
There are two commonly used units of measurement for angles. The more familiar unit of measurement
is that of degrees. A circle is divided into 360 equal degrees so that a right angle is 90°. For the time
being, we’ll only consider angles between 0° and 360°.
Radian
A radian is the measure of the central angle subtended by an arc of a circle whose
length is equal to the radius of the circle. It is the most often used unit to indicate an
angular measure.

Converting Radians to Degrees (Vice
Versa)

Formula:

EXAMPLES
Instruction: Convert degrees to radians

• 120° = n () • 32° = n ()
= 120° () = 32° ()
= radians = radians
COTERMINAL
ANGLES

Are angles in standard position (angles with the initial side on the
positive x-axis) that have a common terminal side.
The measure of any angle coterminal with an angle of degree measure θ is obtained by
evaluating 𝜃 + (𝑛)(360°), where 𝑛 is an integer:

𝒇(𝒏) = [𝜽 + (𝒏)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
EXAMPLES
Find two (2) angles, one positive and one negative, that
are coterminal with the following angles.

• 97° . 2. 584°
𝒇(𝒏) = [𝜽 + (𝒏)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° 𝒇(𝒏) = [𝜽 + (𝒏)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
𝒇(1) = [𝜽 + (1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° 𝒇(1) = [𝜽 + (1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
= [97 + (1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° = [584+ (1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
Answer: 480°

= [97 + 𝟑𝟔𝟎] ° = [584 + 𝟑𝟔𝟎] °

= 475° = 944°

𝒇(𝒏) = [𝜽 + (𝒏)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° 𝒇(𝒏) = [𝜽 + (𝒏)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °

𝒇(-1) = [𝜽 + (-1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° 𝒇(-1) = [𝜽 + (-1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
= [97 + (-1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] ° = [584+ (-1)(𝟑𝟔𝟎)] °
= [97 - 𝟑𝟔𝟎] ° = [584 - 𝟑𝟔𝟎] °
= -2𝟔𝟑° = 224°
