ROCKS
OBJECTIVES:
• Define what is rocks;
• Identify the three different types of
rocks;
• Explain the importance of rocks.
What is a
ROCK?
Rock
is a naturally
occurring solid
aggregate
of one or more
minerals.
study of rocks.
Petrolo
gy
is the scientific
study of rocks.
Petrologist
s 0

• a person (geologist) who

specializes in petrology.
• Classify rocks based on
how they were formed.
THREE TYPES
OF ROCKS
1. Igneous rock
 formed from
hardening and
crystallization of magma
or molten material that
originates deep within rh
earth.
TWO TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
Extrusive/ Volcanic rock
• forms when magma makes its
way to Earth’s surface as lava
and then cools.
• fine-grained crystals since the
cooling process is very fast.
TWO TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
Intrusive/ Plutonic rock
• created by magma.
• Coarse-grained crystals since
the cooling process is very slow.
CLASSIFICATION OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
1. COMPOSITION - it refers of
rock’s mineral and chemical make-
up.
• Felsic- light in color ; feldspar and
silicate
• Mafic- dark-colored igneous rocks
made up of magnesium, calcium and
iron.

Hornblende
• Intermediate - between
mafic and felsic composition.

Diorite
• Ultramafic- denotes
igneous rocks that composed
chiefly of mafic minerals.

Peridotite
2. TEXTURE – overall appearance of
a rock based on the size, shape, and
arrangement of interlocking mineral
crystals.
• Aphanistic – fine-grained rocks with
crystals seen by aid of microscope.

BASALT
• Phaneritic
 coarse-grained rocks.
• Porphyritic
 large crystals
with small crystals.

• Glassy
 a rock that looks like
colored glass
with no visible
mineral crystal.
• Pyroclastic
 results from explosive
fragmentation of volcanic
material.
Examples:

BASALT PUMICE GRANITE GABBRO

2. Sedimentary
rock
 Provide information
about surface conditions
that existed in the Earth’s
past.
THREE TYPES OF
SEDIMENTARY
ROCKS
1. Clastic Sedimentary rock
• formed from accumulation of
clasts: little pieces of broken rocks
and shells.
Examples:

Conglomerate Breccia Shale Sandstone

2. Chemical Sedimentary rock
• formed when dissolved minerals
precipitate from a solution.
Example:

Halite- formed when a body of

seawater becomes closed off and
evaporates.
3. Organic Sedimentary rock
• formed from the accumulation of
animal debris.
Example:

Coal- composed of organic matter in

the form of plants fragments.
EXAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

Chalk Limestone Sandstone

3. Metamorphic rock
 Forms from pre-existing rocks.
Metamorphism – transformation of one rock
type into another.
2 TYPES OF METAMORPHISM
a) Regional – due to change in pressure and
temperature
b) Contact – rock minerals and textures are
changed mainly by
heat due to contact with magma.
CLASSIFICATION:
TEXTURE – refers to the size
arrangement and grains within the rock.
• FOLIATION – any planar
arrangement of mineral grains or
structural features within the rock.
a) Foliated rocks – can be arranged by
increasing metamorphism
Example: Mica
b) Non-foliated rock – usually
made up of only few minerals.
