SCIENTIFIC

INVESTIGATION
Scientific Investigation/Method

•It is a systematic way of solving

a problem and answering
questions about the world
around us.
A Scientific Method consists of 7
components or steps:
1. Making an Observation
2. Asking a Question
3. Formulating a Hypothesis
4. Performing an Experiment
5. Recording and Analyzing Results
6. Drawing a Conclusion; and
7. Communicating the Results
1. MAKING AN OBSERVATION

•Observation is the process of

getting information about the
things around you.
WHAT DO YOU USE TO
OBSERVE THE THINGS
AROUND YOU?
2. ASKING A QUESTION
• Your question should lead you to the
problem
• Problem is a question that you want to
solve or the things you want to discover.
3. FORMULATE A HYPOTHESIS

•A Hypothesis is an educated
guess, a tentative answer, or a
potential answer to the question
or problem asked.
•A Variables are the factors or
parameters that we controlled,
charged, or measured in an
experiment.
•A hypothesis will also serve as
your guide in designing your
experiment.
It is usually written in the:
•If-then format
4. PERFORM AN EXPERIMENT

•Experiment is a series of
tests used to verify the
hypothesis.
•Your experiment should contain
all the variables involved in it.
• Variables are the measurable
characteristics or parameters that
can be modified or changed in an
experiment.
THREE TYPES OF VARIABLES:
1. Independent variable – which is the variable
or condition that you can change in an
experiment.
2. Dependent variable - condition that you
measure or observe
3. Controlled variable – the variable that you
keep constant or unchanged during an
experiment
•The experiment should be
repeated several times to
make sure that the first
result is not just an
accident.
5. RECORDING DATA AND
ANALYZING RESULTS
•This step is where you will
report, interpret, and explain
what happened in your
experiment.
•You can use Charts and
Graphs in presenting your
data and results to make it
easier to visualize for your
audience

•Data are the information
that you gathered in your
experiment.
6. DRAWING A CONCLUSION

•is the summary of the results

you gathered in your
experiment.
•This will give you an
answer if your
hypothesis is correct
or not.
6. COMMUNICATE YOUR
RESULTS
•Informing others about the
result of the experiment.
