Introduction
• Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes
by technology, particularly computer systems.
• To increase student engagement various institutions have started
adapting AI it has the potential to be a highly effective tool for
increasing student engagement.
• AI tutoring systems can give individualized guidance, assistance, or
feedback. AI teaching assistants save teachers time by addressing
students.
• AI systems will increase engagement but would impair students'
capacity to learn, It is critical to investigate how students and teachers
perceive the influence of AI systems.
Purpose Statement
• AI has been adopted in classrooms but there are few studies that address student
engagement through AI.
• We have tried to answer the question that how artificial intelligence is improving student
engagement, and its positive and negative side.
• Hence the objective of the paper was to:
 To identify the different AI-powered technologies used to improve student engagement in
classroom teaching.
 To analyze the effectiveness of AI in enhancing student engagement in classroom
teaching.
 To identify the factors that influence the effectiveness of AI in improving student
engagement in classroom teaching.
 To suggest recommendations for the integration of AI in classroom teaching to improve
student engagement.
Methodology
• This is a review paper that was carried out in compliance with PRISMA
principles.
• This study used multiple databases encompassing Scopus, Google Scholar,
Word of Science, and Science Direct, to extract as many relevant articles as
possible.
• The search keywords determined were the combinations of (a)Student
Engagement and (b)Artificial Intelligence.
• The initial search conducted using the keyword combinations yielded total
of 629 papers throughout the databases which were reduced to 32 papers,
after considering various inclusion and exclusion criteria.
• These 32 articles were then, analyzed and synthesized.

Literature Review
• Alexander Astin, a psychologist, and professor, developed the "Theory
of involvement" in the mid-1980s to explain student engagement.
• Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform our
understanding of education. AI-powered tools and technologies,
ranging from personalized learning algorithms to virtual and
augmented reality, are helping to improve students' engagement in
ways we never imagined possible.
• AI chatbots, Knewton, Kahoot, slido, and Google´S Bard have come up
as a great way to engage students and promote interactive learning.
Student Engagement & Artificial Intelligence

Some examples of how AI-based technologies are :

Knewton: Knewton is a personalized learning platform that uses
artificial intelligence to build learning programs that are customized for
each learner.
Kahoot: Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that uses artificial
intelligence to produce fascinating quizzes and games.
Slido: Slido is a student engagement tool that uses artificial intelligence
to collect input from students in class.
Some of the ways artificial intelligence is being utilized to
enhance student engagement:

• AI technology such as chatbots assists to improve interactive learning

by keeping students engaged and offering timely, individualized
feedback.
• Combining conventional learning with technology may create a
dynamic and engaging learning environment for student achievement.
• AI can be used to teach students to think outside the box and
investigate alternative points of view.
• Validating AI-generated responses helps students build critical thinking
and confidence in their learning.
Factors influencing the use of AI in boosting student engagement:

• The quality of the AI-powered technology utilized:

• The application of AI
• The manner in which AI is utilized
• The role of the teacher
• The age of the student
• Prior technological experience of the student
• The motivation of the student
Some recommendations to improve student engagement
through AI are:

• Personalize learning by using AI

• Use AI to adjust learning
• Use AI to offer feedback
• Create interactive learning experiences with AI
• Use artificial intelligence to evaluate student learning
Conclusion
• AI may be used more to customize learning, offer feedback, and
generate interesting learning experiences to enhance student
engagement.
• There are still issues to be addressed, such as data privacy, prejudice,
and ethical concerns.
• As AI technology advances, it is expected that the potential benefits
of AI for student engagement will grow.
