ABSTRACT:

Study of polarization in double refraction using Calcite

prism and Determining intensity and refractive index
and verifying malus law and Brewster law
MATERIALS:

• Polarizer
• Analyzer
• Lux meter
• Light source
• Nicol Prism
DOUBLE REFRACTION:

DOUBLE
REFRACTION, PHENO
MENA DISCOVERED
BY ERASMUS
BARTHOLINUS THAT

UNPOLARISED LIGHT
IS INCIDENT IN A

REFRACTIVE INDEX

The ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to its

speed in a specific medium

n=c/v
MALUS LAW:

It states that the intensity of the plane polarized light that

passes through the analyzer is directly proportional to the square of
the cosine of the angle between the plane of the polarizer and the
transmission axis of the analyzer.
BREWSTER'S LAW:

Brewster's law, relationship for light waves stating that the maximum
polarization (vibration in one plane only) of a ray of light may be achieved by
letting the ray fall on a surface of a transparent medium in such a way that the
refracted ray makes an angle of 90° with the reflected ray.
