“BIDA ANG SAYA”

ACTIVITY 2
LOCAL FAMOUS ENTREPRENEUR
TONY TAN CAKTIONG
BY: R-JAY LAUGO GUARIN
BSAB 2-2
WHY DID I CHOOSE HIM?
• Tony always had big dreams and saw the enormous potential in his
company. He trusted in his ability to grow his once-small company into
one of the biggest in the Philippines, Asia, and now the entire world.
• Tony Tan Caktiong is the founder and chairman of Jollibee Food, one of
the world's fastest-growing Asian restaurant chains. With partner Edgar
Sia II, Caktiong also owns a stake in the fast-growing DoubleDragon
Properties.
• The real time Net worth of Tony is $1.3B.
This is a story of how a “happy, always smiling bee”
dominates almost every corner of the streets in the metro.

• Jollibee founder Tony Tan Caktiong, is another of those Chinese immigrant family who went
to the Philippines in hope for a better future. Tony is born on January 5, 1953 in Fujian,
province of China. His father worked for a Chinese temple in binondo as a chef. Due to his
father’s talent in cooking he was able to acquire an offer to manage a restaurant in Davao.
The entire family pitched in to help each other grow the business. Because of the family's
hard work, Tony was able to attend University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Toni enrolled in a
chemical engineering program. Tony and his friend went to the Magnolia Ice Cream plant
for a visit one day, and young Tony became interested in a poster advertising to franchise an
ice cream house for only 17,500 pesos per branch. The family set aside 350,000 pesos to
invest in the purchase of two franchise branches of the ice cream shop. Cubao Ice Cream
House and Quiapo Ice Cream House are their two ice cream house armies.
• His entire family went back to manila and focus to their new business. As
the business grew, the family began to hire skilled workers such as
managers, supervisors, and service personnel to help them meet
operational demands. Tony expanded after only two years, serving
hamburgers and fried chicken in addition to ice cream. Not for long,
chicken, hamburgers, and ice cream are selling very well, lines begin to
form, and success is a constant concern for them. Tony decided to rebrand
the restaurant and leave the Ice cream house name on it. Tony suggested
“bee” as their icon for a sign of hard work as is bees are known for their
hard work to produce honey. They are also associated “happy” as the
Filipino culture portrays happy costumer. Tony came up with the word
“jolly” in replacement of the word happy so they come up with the word
“Jollibee”.
“Birth of Jollibee”

• In 1978, the family formally launched Jollibee in the Philippines. One of

their key strengths is the concept of serving Filipino comfort foods to
customers. When international brand McDonalds first appeared on the
scene as a major competitor to Jollibee in 1980.

Problems face and How he solved them
• “In one of our early planning sessions, my vision was to create the largest food company in the world. That
was when we had 5 stores. Some people thought I was overly optimistic,” Caktiong said in an APEC Summit.
• Jollibee only had five stores when multi-national chain McDonald’s entered the Philippine market. Friends
told him to sell out but Caktiong held on to his dream. He pursued this dream and tried (sometimes failed)
new things or menu offerings. “We thought that (barbeque chicken product) was our best product. We did a
lot of work on it. But it didn’t do very well. Do I call it a major mistake? Maybe not a major mistake but it’s a
failure we have in our history,” he shared. “But don’t be scared to make mistakes. Just be quick to recognize
them and learn from them as fast as you can. Learn from each mistake and it will not be a waste of time.”
