BSAB 2-2 Jose Magsaysay, Jr. Entrepreneur-in-Residence Magsaysay, Jose Pantaleon was born on February 28, 1961 in Quezon City, Philippines. Son of Jose Del Fiero and Felicidad (Pantaleon) Magsaysay. Magsaysay earned his Master of Entrepreneurship degree from the Asian Institute of Management in 2001 and completed the Owner/President Management Program at the Harvard Business School in 2016. Potato Corner is a well- known food cart company in the United States. It was founded in 1990 by Joe Magsaysay.
He was then offered the
opportunity to become a manager; his store management abilities came in handy when he and a friend decided to open Potato Corner. He went on to become one of the Philippines’ most successful businessman. Potato Corner’s food cart business grew rapidly in 1992, and is now a global franchise. Magsaysay believes that completely dedicating time and effort to one's craft can lead to success. His advice to would- be entrepreneurs is to “Master one thing only and do not think about the money. As soon as you master your craft, people will want to be your partner.” Magsaysay's success story started at the bottom of the proverbial ladder. His entry into the food industry began when, as a part-time working student, he was hired as a janitor at Wendy's in 1983. He rose through the ranks, moving from management trainee to its Board of Directors within the space of a decade.
He is creative, focus,
determine, and driven. In the late 1990s, during the Asian financial crisis, Potato Corner suffered its worst setback when franchisees started to close down, bringing its total outlets down from a high of 120 to only 40.
By 1997, a total of 120 kiosks were been opened, but
everything changed when the Asian crisis hit, resulting in decreasing of active kiosks to 40 by year 2000. Given that the crisis was a result of currency devaluation which caused prices to increase and imports to become more costly, Potato Corner was directly affected by the crisis because most of its potatoes were imported from Belgium and America. Despite this obstacle, Potato Corner was able to surpass this and achieved even more by expanding their brand into the USA, Panama, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia. • They went with the flow and made better ideas. As an entrepreneur, you should find ways to improve the society and see what the people actually need in order to create successful enterprises.
