Forests of Pakistan

By: Bilal, Ainna, Zainab, Isra, Amaama

Characteristics of Rakh forests

 It is located in semi-arid and arid regions that include the deserts of Pakistan. The forest
is covering the whole Indus plain excluding few areas such as Gujrat, Sialkot, and Jehlum
and parts of the Deccan Plateau.
 It also present around thar, thal and cholistan deserts.
 The recorded rainfall in the arid region is 200mm while in the semi-arid it is 250-750mm.
 The temperature ranges from 23 to 50°C.
 A thorn forest is characterized by dense, scrubland.
 This forest primarily consists of plant species that are open, low and xerophytic, with
trees and plants armed with thorns and spines.
 Lacks grass.
 Many plants have large, leathery leaves to minimize water loss and some have long roots
to penetrate deep into the soil to access groundwater.
 Cacti or other succulent plants, thick stemmed plants, thorny brush and arid adapted
grasses occupy the ground floor.
 Types of trees found here include Plum trees, Date tress and Babul.
Importance and Threats faced by rakh forsets

Importance of Tropical Thorn Forest:

 Provides fodder for animals.
 Used for construction.
 Provides watershed protection.
 Includes desert regions that have great economic importance due to recreational
and sports activities.
 Used for firewood.
Threats faced by Tropical Thorn forest:
 Deforestation
 Urbanization
 Droughts and salinity.
 This region is abundant in granite and marble, and mining is harming ecosystems
and wildlife habitats.
 Forests have been largely converted to agriculture
Sub Tropical Scrub Forests

 These scrub forest occur at height of 1500 to 3000 feet.

 Sub-humid, subtropical climate.
 The terrains of these forests are hilly.
 The trees and shrubs are mostly thorny and evergreen but some are not thorny
e.g.
 They are found in North western areas, particularly in Rawalpindi, Mianwali and
Khushab districts
 Are always dry
 Soil is particularly saline
 Are found in Semi-deserts
 It is 23- 50°C in the forest
 The plants are usually spread widely
Importance and Threats faced by Scrub forests in Pakistan

Importance:
 They protect the natural environment
 Regulate atmospheric conditions
 Produce goods like fruits, timber, medicine, fiber and Bio diversity conservation
 Used for grazing
 Protect soil erosion
Threats:
 Overgrazing
 Deforestation
 Firewood collection
 Climate change
 Establishing safe areas
 Pollution
Bela Forests

 Have a diverse wildlife

 Dry climate ;25 to 35 °C. There is less rainfall.
 Thorny vegetation, and are able to survive with less water. This includes Acacia
trees and ziziphus trees.
 The forests is also covered in herbs, wild flowers and different kinds of grasses.
 Have a variety wildlife like mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
 Found in Balochistan and sindh
 Found at an altitude of 300 metres meaning they are found in lowland areas.
Importance and Threats faced by Bela Forests in Pakistan

Importance:
 The trees stabilize soil and lessen erosion
 Carbon sequestration
 Watershed protection
 Fodder and fuelwood
 Medicine
Threats:
 Overgrazing
 Deforestation
 Climate change
 Lack of awarness
 Urbanazation
 Pollution
