ELECTROMAGNETIC

THEORY
CONTRIBUTION
OF MICHAEL
FARADAY IN
ELECTROMAGNE
TIC THEORY
MICHAEL
FARADAY
He was an English scientist who was bo
rn on September 22, 1791, in Newingto
n, Surrey and died on August 25, 1867, i
n Hampton Court, Surrey
MICHAEL
FARADAY

Faraday, who became one of the

greatest scientists of the 19th
century, began his career as a
chemist.
MICHAEL
FARADAY’S
MAJOR
CONTRIBUTION
His major contribution, however, was in the field of electricity
and magnetism

- Electric current from a magnetic field.

-Invented the first electric motor and dynamo.
- Demonstrated the relation between electricity and chemical bonding.

-Discovered the effect of magnetism on light.

ELECTROMAGNETI
C INDUCTION

It occurs whenever a magnetic field and an electric conductor, such

as a coil of wire, move relative to one another. As long as the
conductor is part of a closed circuit, the current will flow through it
whenever it crosses lines of force in the magnetic field.
ELECTRIC
MOTOR AND
DYNAMO
A motor utilises the energy of an electric current to
cause rotation of coil and shaft while a dynamo converts
the mechanical energy from rotation to electric current
using the principal of electromagnetic induction.
ELECTRIC
MOTOR AND
DYNAMO
A dynamo is used to generate electricity, whereas a
motor is used to convert electrical energy into
mechanical energy. In other words, a dynamo is a
generator, and a motor is a motor.
RELATION BETWEEN
ELECTRICITY AND
CHEMICAL BONDING

Electrical energy is the movement of electrons through a

conductor, while chemical energy is stored in the bonds
between atoms. In order for electricity to flow, there must
be a complete circuit with no break in the path.
EFFECT OF
MAGNETISM ON
LIGHT
A magnetic field can shift the lag between the
clockwise and counterclockwise polarization
components of light passing through a medium. This
effect is known as the Faraday effect
MICHAEL
FARADAY
His inventions of
electromagnetic rotary devices formed the
foundation of electric motor technology, and
it was largely due to his efforts that
electricity became practical for use in
technology.
