Techniques to assist with mobility
• Repositioning: in bed, in chairs, side to side,
limbs, hands, good body alignment
• Use slide sheets to take the friction and weight
out of moves, including repositioning
• Use walk belts, non-slip socks, or non-slip
shoes and be alert whilst walking

• Have crutches at correct height, check for
moisture on the floor
• Have slight elbow bend for all aids
• Don’t overextend with aid

• Allow time for blood pressure to adjust once

• Use the powerful muscles of your legs, hips


and pelvis to move people, not arms and back
• Work with their range of motion and use joints
and limbs to help their movement

• Minimise strain through vertebral discs by poor
back posture during move, including twisting,
straining, pulling and holding for long periods.
• Transfers: chair to chair, bed to chair
• Keep feet under chair, and bottom close to edge,
ask them to lean forward to push up off chair

• Move slowly and with small steps or movements


• Check chair position and person’s position
before sitting: feel for backs of legs on chair and
hands on arm rests before sitting.

• Be careful with skin – avoid skin tears from
friction and grabbing directly onto skin
• Be alert for falls, e.g. tripping, tangled limbs

situation assessed
