Lesson 3: Read
Why is it called the Bronze Age?
During the Bronze Age, people discovered that
some rocks had metal inside them. They also learnt
how to extract (take out) the metals, melt them
down, and shape them into objects or tools they
could use.
One of these metals was bronze. Bronze was much
stronger than other metals and easier to shape. It
was very useful for making tools and weapons.

Lesson 3: Read
What was it like to live in Bronze Age Britain?

Bronze was rare because it was harder to

make than other metals. This made it
valuable.
People started to use objects like bronze
jewellery to show their wealth. Some
people became richer than others, and this
led
to fighting.

Groups started to attack each other to try to take their wealth and land. There
were more conflicts between people.

Lesson 3: Read
What was it like to live in Bronze Age Britain?
Communities began to build protective walls around
their villages. The people farmed in the fields outside, but
lived behind the walls.
Houses were still mostly made from wattle
and daub but they were often round, rather than
rectangular.
As people grew wealthier, they traded objects like
jewellery. People needed to transport their goods to trade
them. In the Stone Age, people could only walk to places.
In Bronze Age Britain people started riding horses to
travel further and faster. They used carts with wheels,
which allowed them to carry goods.
