This document summarizes a doctoral thesis comparing the status of 15th century artisans in Šibenik, Croatia and eastern Italian communes. It finds that while artisans belonged to populi groups and fraternities in both regions, there were differences in salaries between professions, availability of materials, and level of export opportunities. The thesis also examines specifics about artisan lives regarding dowries, clothing, nutrition that varied between communes. Overall, artisans represented an important part of communal societies in both Šibenik and places like Reccanati and the Marche region of Italy.
