HYDRO-POWERED

AUTOMATED
WASTE
SEGREGATOR

BY:
JOHN FELIX REX S. SALISE
• Land pollution is a global issue that affects living
organisms, including humans.
• Waste segregation is a critical aspect of sustainable
waste management that involves separating waste
materials for recycling or disposal. Automated waste
segregators can help sort waste materials without human
intervention, but many use lithium-ion or lithium
batteries that are dangerous and have negative
environmental impacts. CHAPTER 1:
• Hydro power is a clean and renewable energy source
RATIONALE
that can be used to power various systems, including
automated waste segregators.
• The purpose of this research is to design and develop a
hydro-powered automated waste segregator that can
effectively segregate waste materials without human
intervention while utilizing the renewable energy source
of hydro power.
This study was aimed to determine
the potential of building an automated waste
segregator powered by hydroelectricity
Specifically, it attempts to answer the
following questions:
STATEMENT OF
THE PROBLEM 1. How long does it take the waste
segregator to segregate:
a. 1.5kg pieces of wastes
b. 2kg pieces of wastes
c. 3kg pieces of wastes
2. How much water flow is needed to
power the waste segregator?

3. What is the average voltage

discharge of the hydroelectricity
generator? STATEMENT OF
THE PROBLEM

4. Is there a significant difference in

charges stored in using a
hydroelectricity generator instead of
lithium battery?

Key points:
• Automatic waste segregator is a machine that sorts
different types of waste materials using various
techniques such as sensors, magnets, and air jets,
with the purpose of enhancing recycling efficiency
and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
• Pollution is the introduction of substances or energy
liable to cause hazards to human health, harm to CHAPTER 2
living resources and ecological systems, damage to
structure or amenity or interference with legitimate
uses of the environment.
• Land pollution is the deposition of solid or liquid
waste materials on land or underground in a manner
that can contaminate the soil and groundwater,
threatens public health, and cause unsightly
conditions and nuisances.
• Environmental pollution, including air, water, and soil
pollution, was responsible for approximately 9% of all deaths
worldwide in 2015, including around 1.3 million deaths due to
cancer.
• Plastic waste is one of the top contributors to land pollution.
Globally, we produce around 300 million tonnes of plastic
waste every year, and if current trends continue, this is expected
to double by 2030. Around 79% of all plastic waste ever
produced has ended up in landfills, dumps or the environment,
with only 9% being recycled and 12% incinerated.
CHAPTER 2 Approximately 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the
ocean each year, causing harm to marine life and ecosystems.
• The Philippines is one of the largest polluter in the world,
generating 2.7 million metric tonnes of plastic rubbish annually.
The country has 403 open dumpsites and 108 controlled
dumpsites despite passing a solid waste management law that
required the conversion of all open dumpsites into sanitary
landfills around 20 years ago.
• Heavy metals are also a significant contributor to
environmental pollution.
