FIP-1: Community Focused Investment to

Address Deforestation and Forest Degradation in
West Kalimantan, Indonesia
A 5 years (2018-2023) Grant Project funded by
the Asian Development Bank in Cooperation with
the MOEF, Indonesia
World Forestry Congress XV, South Korea, Ma

Introduction
West Kalimantan has a high diversity of biodiversity.
In Betung Kerihun National Park, at least 1,216 flora
species are identified, 75 species of them are
endemic to Kalimantan. The area also has at least 48
mammal species, including orangutan and honey
bear. Conserving this biodiversity is important to
sustain the ecological function. The Assisted Natural
Regeneration, introduced by the Forest Investment
Program-1 with the objective to provide alternative
methodology for conserving biodiversity, improve
natural wilding growth, and support in sustaining
genetic resources.

Key Message 1

The Assisted Natural Regeneration is a solution for

ecosystem restoration in the forest area with low to
medium degraded area. For low degraded area, no
enrichment planting is required.
FIP-1 key activities to support this Key Messages:
1. Selection of degraded forest within the National
Park. A 2,000 Ha was identified
2. Establishment of community group
3. Implementation of ANR (combined with forest
patrol)

Key Message 2

The key success of ANR is community participation.

ANR can also improve forest ecosystem, in which
local community will have the opportunity to harvest
a non timber forest product as their additional
income (honey, rattan) as well as environmental
services (ecotourism, water resources).
Livelihood programs that are implemented: fish
drying/processing, honey production, operation of
processing house.

Key Message 3

To be able to maintain the program in the long

future, community should be given a legal access to
the forest area (e.g., social forestry license,
conservation partnership agreement).
A total of 1,800 Ha within the Park are brought into a
Conservation Partnership Agreement (between
community and the Park management unit).

Conclusion

The ANR is an effective and efficient tool to support

ecosystem and landscape restoration program. The
design of ANR can be adjusted according to the field
condition, capacity of local institution and
availability of resources.
Involvement of local community in the program and
providing community group with long term legal
access to the natural resources will improve their
responsible ownership to the area and to the
program.
