Word Problems
Applications of algebra are the real-life
scenario that requires converting situations to
algebraic equations having the unknown
quantity/quantities as the variable and other
quantities are constants.

The solutions to the problem depend upon

the type of equations constructed which
could be in linear or quadratic form.

Age Problem
• One of the most common problem in

• This type of problems must be solved

meticulous by giving more emphasis to the
tenses (past, present or future) of the
statement.

• Modifiers of time for classification:

Past Age – was, ago, last, yesterday etc. (-)

Present Age – is, are, am, now, being etc.

Future Age – will, shall, be, further, hence etc. (+)

person can finish 1/5 of the work in one
day.

• For a complete job,

Three bulbs begin flashing at the same time and continue
to do so at intervals of 21, 28 and 30 seconds,
respectively. How many seconds will they all flash together
again?
Solution:
The time after which they all flash together again must be a multiple of

DIGIT PROBLEM
Basis of analysis

For: 2-digit number

10t + u = original number

10u + t = reverse number

For: 3-digit number

100h + 10t + u = original number

100u + 10t + h = reverse number
Where:

U - units digit
t – tens digit
h – hundreds digit
