 EFFECT ON PAKISTAN
DURING 2020
• The COVID-19 outbreak started as pneumonia in
December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The subsequent
pandemic was declared as the sixth public health emergency
of international concern on January 30, 2020, by the World
Health Organization. Pakistan could be a potential hotspot
for COVID-19 owing to its high population of 204.65
million and its struggling health care and economic
systems. Pakistan was able to tackle the challenge with
relatively mild repercussions. The present analysis has been
conducted to highlight the situation of the disease in
Pakistan in 2020 and the measures taken by various
stakeholders coupled with support from the community to
abate the risk of catastrophic spread of the virus.

LOCKDOWN IN PAKISTAN:

On 23 March 2020, the Government of

Pakistan declared a smart lockdown all over
the country including Islamabad and
Rawalpindi (14). The residents of Islamabad
and Rawalpindi were advised to stay at home
to avoid close contact with others.

GDP growth rate; −0.4
percent for the fiscal
year 2020

eat in the last seven days,
according to Household
Pulse Survey data collected
September 29–October 11,
2021
2- The shortage of inputs,
including raw materials, is also
reported to be a serious problem for
firms, one of the consequences of
the lockdown and other restrictions
related to the pandemic.
4- An estimated 38 percent of
children lived in households that
have trouble covering usual
expenses, according to detailed data
from the Pulse Survey. They
included 57 percent of children in
Black households, 46 percent of
children in Latino households, 30
percent of children in white
households, and 24 percent of
children in Asian households.

Education systems were already failing our
children even before the pandemic.
COVID-19 exacerbated this learning crisis
and children in almost every country have
fallen behind in their learning.
EDUCATIONAL EFFECT
Closing schools and offices ensures that people
can limit their interactions with others and slows
the spread of the virus while the healthcare system
copes with the pandemic.
Since its first cases in China, COVID-19
has spread to almost every country
worldwide. According to the World Health
Organization, 167,515 global cases were
reported, including 6,606 deaths, as of
March 16, 2020.
Many schools and universities are opting to
continue their normal classes on online
platforms. This includes the use of online tools,
such as group video programs, that allow
teachers and students to meet and conduct
classes over the internet.
