FOREARM FRACTURES

Definition
•Fracture of shaft radius & ulna bone

•Not cancellous bone

•Not anticular involvement

•Not single radius or ulna fractures.

•Closed fracture
Definition

•Fracture of ulnar shaft with dislocation of Proximal radioulnar

joint: Monteggia fracture

•Fracture of distal radius with dislocation of distal radioulnar

joint: Galeazzi fracture
Anatomy

Radius & ulna

Cross section

•Flexors

•Extensors

•Vessels: radial, ulnar

•Nerves: radial, ulnar, median

Prevalence

•Account for 15-20% Forearm injuries: 6% whole body

fractures.

•All age

•Usually severe displacement, sometimes muscular

interposition
Mechanism of fractures
Direct
Indirect Trauma
Mixed
Segmental,
third fragment
Pathology of Fractures

•Fracture lines: transverse, oblique, spiral, comminuted,

segmental (radius & ulna)

•Displacements:

+ Medial/ lateral + Distraction

+ Angulation + Rotation

+ Overriding
Displacements

Radius supination

Ulna pronation
