Types of dental personnel

1. Dentist: a person who is permitted to practice dentistry


under laws of the relevant state
2. Dental auxiliaries: it is a generic term for all persons
who assist the dentist in treating patients

Dental Therapist

This is an operating auxiliary, who is permitted to carry out the prescription


of a supervising dentist, dentist, certain specified preventive and treatment
measures including the preparation of cavities and restoration of teeth.

They are like school dental nurse but their role is quite different, they are
not permitted to diagnose and plan dental care. They are permitted to work
based on the written treatment plan by the dentist

An EFDA is a highly trained and skilled dental
assistant or dental hygienist who receives additional
education to enable them to perform reversible,
intraoral procedures, and additional tasks
(expanded duties or extended duties), services or
capacities, often including direct patient care
services

Assist the dentist or dental hygienist in treating patients


but is not legally permitted to treat patient independently.

A dental assistant may only work under the supervision of


a licensed dentist carrying out duties prescribed by the
dentist or by a dental hygienist employed by the dentist.

Dental Secretary/Receptionist

This is a person who assists


the dentist with his secretarial
work and patient reception

Dental laboratory technician

A person who fulfils the prescriptions provided by dentist


regarding extra oral construction and repair of oral
appliances and bridge work.

They receive their apprenticeship which is associated with


formal training at a dental school or technical college.

This is a person who instructs in the prevention of


dental disease also be permitted to apreventive agents
